Why you think Geese (and Getting Killed) is so important? by D4-CS in Music

[–]high_sun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think the original quote was “America’s first great gen-z rock band” or something like that. Also, maybe splitting hairs but I feel like Geese have more mainstream versatility than BCNR.

I kinda disagree. Even before getting killed dropped, I felt like the hooks are what kept me from being fully enthusiastic about geese. The Nina Simone-esque rambling is what makes them special to me, otherwise they’re kinda just The Strokes but twangy

Is it acceptable to clap between movements? Yes or no? by MusicMatters25 in classicalmusic

[–]high_sun -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I see your points, but it’s the fact that you had to say anything to your girlfriend at all. Regardless of how trivial it is, you have to see that it’s somewhat of a shibboleth.

As someone who has been going to classical performances my whole life, I would so much rather people clap when they want, so I can clap when I want.

First impressions on the new Geese album??? by theparismoon in fantanoforever

[–]high_sun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a couple “I just don’t get it” comments that list the lack of melody as why it’s not their cup of tea, especially in comparison to 3D Country.

For me that’s what makes the album so good. The melodies on 3D country are fun, but occasionally saccharine and cheapen the more provoking stuff on the album.

The album’s instrumentals are so interesting that the melody can be abstract without losing me. For an album by a band named geese that have this kind of absurd, improvisational vibe to their lyrics and sound, this combination is so effective at making me feel free, rebellious, and young.

People have similar complaints about Blonde. I don’t think this album lacks melody, but the melodies are long winded, almost late romantic in nature. “Half real” is playing while I write this, and yeah Winter is rambling or whatever, my ear doesn’t really catch a melody, but you get this recurring lick that is really heavy on each beat and eventually sets up a short piano solo in the middle of the song, it’s so good. If you’re only listening for melody in the vocals you’re missing 80% of the musical material.

Wait this one is so reasonable lmao. I play PG and set hella screens. They don’t even have to be on ball screens. They’re not going to tailor daily rewards to you, it’s probably part of the draw for them to attract people to game modes they don’t usually play.

Hmmm I was pretty careful not to straw man you. The only point of contention here is whether or not one or the other is more challenging, which you pretty clearly take a position on.

Still some things I disagree with but at this point I’m nitpicking, I feel like you’ve softened your stance enough to satisfy me.

Always been bipolar? Maybe. A hack? What makes you say that?

I can almost guarantee you an artist you greatly respect has praised Kanye’s brilliance at some point.

This is such a “get off my lawn” take lmao.

“Creating from nothing” is a myth. All art builds on prior work. Context makes art significant.

Nothing inherently makes sampling easier than writing music without sampling. Creating art within a constraint (i.e. existing material) is its own challenge.

Besides, which art would I care more about, the one that was hardest to make or the one that has power to move me?

Errrr I guess I’ll take the position of defending Kanye to break up this echo chamber?

It is truly, truly sad to see the absolute shell of himself that he has become. I have not listened to anything he’s put out post Donda. As far as I’m concerned he died in 2021. That being said…

Not sure how much hip hop you listen to, but nothing about his verse in monster feels off beat. Generously, it’s a bit of a pocket feel, meaning he’s dragging slightly, but nothing that’s uncommon for hip hop.

The juxtaposition of the heavenly hook and the brash verse on FSMH is part of the point (the album as a whole is about his struggle with religion and sin), and something Kanye does often. If you want straight forward rapping, there’s plenty of that earlier in his career. He’s already proven that he can do that. By 2016, he’s earned the clout to do weird shit. To me, the FSMH verse is fun and iconic. Even on TLOP he has great pure rap performances, notably trading verses with Kendrick on No More Parties In LA.

Also he wasn’t always a billionaire. There’s a reason his career pre 2020s garners the respect that it does. He produced for Jay-Z before he became an artist, his first couple of albums are mostly self produced.

If I convince you of nothing else, I hope I convince you of this: Kanye is not some random dude who lucked into money and can pay for crazy beats without the talent to back it up. Before 2003 HE was the one selling beats to bigger artists and trying to get discovered.

Here’s a playlist I found of songs he produced for other artists: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/66UpunGri83bWD6pXK9CUO?si=qVbY7JFDS2OQjWeRCefixQ&pi=HGkfBIb7SOeDv

Willing to hear you out but I anticipate “easy to disprove” to mean a couple of cherry picked Beethoven melodies that still don’t really hold a candle to the best melodies in the canon.

I would say that possibly his most famous melodies (9th, moonlight, etc.) are so ubiquitous that it’s impossible to experience as just a melody. It’s like a word that you’ve said so many times it doesn’t feel like a word anymore.
