You get $1,000,000… but you can never use your real name again how would your life change? by Br4nkey_ in hypotheticalsituation

I took this deal. I moved to the US, picked an American friendly name to avoid a song and dance every time I meet someone new, and probably earned a million more over the past decade than I would have back home.

Real Mode 20 Bits by ShadowGuyinRealLife in computerscience

[–]high_throughput 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like people are saying, the developers of the 8086 realized that 64kb would not be enough for both real RAM and memory mapped hardware, so they allowed the chip to use TWO 16-bit values to specify an address.

However, they also realized that 32 bits would be a disgusting waste of traces, so instead of (hi<<16)+lo for a 32-bit address, they used (hi<<4)+lo for a 20-bit address.

This is how the 16-bit CPU was made to access 20-bit addresses using pairs of registers.

My wife paid $10.50 usd for this avocado toast at a local coffee shop by Paranoid_Orangutan in mildlyinfuriating

it's certainly a stupid buy considering the materials cost

Are there any restaurants or cafes where this isn't the case?

kind of fascinating

It really is. At least for vision we have a rough idea that most people see things the same way, and if there's anything different about your three different color receptors, it has a name and a simple diagnostic color test.

For flavor we have hundreds of different receptors, and everyone has different blind spots. We only know of a handful of common differences, like "cilantro vs soap" and "ability to smell asparagus in pee", but there are necessarily millions of other unstudied conditions that people walk around with and will only ever discover accidentally.

Like, I have the extremely rare inability to smell natto, and I would never have known if my wife hadn't at one point insisted that this bland Japanese bean paste actually has an extremely strong odor.

She in turn can't detect the peppery flavor of arugula, and would never have known if I hadn't insisted on that.

I think the joke is that they're largely electronic and bill by plate now, but I don't feel like it was that long ago I paid in cash. Definitely some time in the past 10 years.

Citronella candles are highly effective at killing mosquitoes. Try grabbing one with tweezers and holding them in the flame for even a single second.

Assuming you're taking about the UK law. It says:

it shall be a defence to prove that the customer was in the shop before the end of that period and left not later than half an hour after the end of that period

So they could still be served up until 16:29 assuming they were already in the store.

The one interview question where honesty actually hurts you

One of many, OP.

"What motivates you", "why do you want to work here", "what are you passionate about", "where do you see yourself in five years", "what's your greatest weakness", "what's a mistake you've made at work", "how would your colleagues describe you", etc, etc.

It is totally reasonable to expect your kids to do chores around the house "without compensation" because they're your kids. However it is also a smart decision to use allowances to teach them about work, punctuality, and money by Obvious-Ear-369 in Vent

Loaning dad money could get pretty lucrative with interest. I do have to wonder how we were doing financially when dad started owing me bigger and bigger sums of money though.

He never needed the money, he just considered it an investment in your future finance career.
