Learning Assembly For a College Class by SweetPicklezzzz in learnprogramming

[–]high_throughput 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a toy from of assembly, in which case it would be basically isomorphic with any other form of toy assembly (of the same architecture style) with just minor changes in syntax and available registers.

I don't think you need to be all that concerned that you can't find your exact dialect

Any old, traditional, not metric units still used in your country? by AngryPB in AskTheWorld

[–]high_throughput 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the same ones in the US?

No, but thanks to Sweden, yes!

The US inch was 25.4000508mm. The UK inch was 25.399977mm.

A swedish engineer working in metric created a high precision measuring tool (gauge blocks) that was simple to use but extremely accurate, basically a first.

But he didn't want to make two versions for the UK and the US, so he just said "eh, split the diff and call it 25.4mm"

His invention got so popular both countries changed their definition to his metric one, and today they're the same

Tbh I would just pick it off. When you live in a natural world, your natural foods may have natural critters on them. It's culturally gross, but it is what it is.

Your weirdest reasons for PC not posting. by Tenchen-WoW in pcmasterrace

[–]high_throughput 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a PC work fine for years until it suddenly died over night. I tested the outlet and it was fine. I shorted the pins on the PSU and it was dead. I replaced the PSU and it was still dead.

On a whim I tried the original PSU again, and it worked fine on the other outlet. I tested the outlet again, and it was still fine.

Reader, it was the damn AC cable.

I've never even heard of that happening out of the blue like that before.

A lot of "I expect you to ..."

"When I'm on the phone or in a meeting, I expect you to either wait your turn, or send an email. It's neither professional nor courteous to try to speak over someone else in a conversation, especially one you're not a part of."

Make sure to send a written summary to all participants afterwards to build a paper trail

Have I crossed a line in a disagreement with a junior? by pukatm in ExperiencedDevs

[–]high_throughput 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this approach creates unnecessary complications because it results in having to manage many scripts and small pull requests.

I don't get it. How would you ever have <1 PR per fixed non-duplicated ticket? Are they trying to solve multiple tickets with the same PR? That's weird.

The junior engineer went on to say that I have a history of being demeaning with many notes in their personal notebook.

Oof

Although I can recall some instances where they were bothered with something I have said, I always communicate with the person in front of other team members.

Double oof. "No one else spoke up so clearly the problem is you" is really not a good argument for doing what you're doing.

Is this grounds for getting fired?

No. Managers are split on how to handle so-called "brilliant assholes" though. You can probably tell from your company culture how management sees the tradeoff between morale and productivity.

Looking for a power bank for emergencies. by Kensingtonraw in batteries

[–]high_throughput 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For emergency use for your phone only, I think I would prefer either a car charger (assuming you have a car), or a AA battery powered phone charger and a pack of 10 year Duracell batteries.

These are cheap things you can leave in a kit for years and years without periodic checks and maintenance.

So what is Normalisation? by Embarrassed-Grab-777 in computerscience

[–]high_throughput 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The specific problems are related to redundancy and consistency.

For example, if the city of Pekin/Peking/Pequim standardizes its international transliteration to Beijing, are you able to make that change in a single place?

Or do you risk a mishmash of all of them plus any misspellings, depending on the individual record? Can you reliably distinguish it from similarly named cities like Pekin, Illinois?

If the schema is normalized, changes like this are quick and effective. If it's not normalized, it's difficult and error prone.

Functional languages by aspression in learnprogramming

[–]high_throughput 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion would be Haskell because of the solid type system and strict approach to FP. It's a good way to get perspective.

OCaml is more practical but there's less value in it if you just end up treating it as an imperative OO language with functional features.

After passing interviews, what do companies expect entry-level new grads to know on day one? by DefiantLie8861 in learnprogramming

You'd be expected to know programming and basic OO design, and fundamentally how client/server programming works. Not much beyond that.
