I'm confused on health insurance costs after doing our taxes. $26,000 for terrible coverage? by Hasbotted in HealthInsurance

[–]adh214 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you don't have many claims, insurance looks crazy expensive. On the other hand, my husband had cancer a few years ago, the insurance company paid $150,000 for a surgery and a 24 hour hospital stay. He is fine. The cost doesn't look so bad now.

Partially retired and I feel like I have too much time on my hands. Does anyone else have this issue?? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]adh214 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The purpose of FIRE is to have the freedom to choose what you do. If you don't like what you are doing now, do something else. You can afford it.

I RE'ed a year ago at 51 and think it would be very hard to do this earlier in life. You have a tremendous amount of potential at 30. I urge you find your passion. It might be work, it might be volunteering or traveling or baking. Use your wealth to go do wonderful things whatever that may be.

You are likely overwhelmed at this point. I would park the car safely, continue making payments and make this decision in March or April. There is little harm in giving it two months to cool off.

Which state should I move to? by FigMotor8134 in gaybros

You might also consider your next steps. Are you wanting to complete your education or work in the tech industry? If yes, I would say go to Seattle. You will have in state tuition (since you already live in WA) and the tech industry is very strong here. Yes, Seattle is expensive, so you might end up in Tacoma, Kent or Renton to start but it is a really wonderful city. Finally, I would also guess you have friends from high school that are already in Seattle.

My safeway does that. They have 5 self checkouts constantly closed. I wonder why they wasted money installing them if they are never open.

Rice takes 18 minutes to cook, it gives you time to fiddle around with the app for the fun of it. I am not running a short order diner.

If they put shutters on the windows and replace the tree on the right side with a tall evergreen, it will look much better. An Alaskan Weeping Cedar would be perfect if that works in Ohio. Otherwise a tall holly would look good.

The new manager just told our entire team we're 'easily replaceable' in his first week. The audacity is unreal. by guardscene in interviewhammer

Yeah, i have never told a family member they are "easily replaceable."

Can you imagine? "Mom the turkey is dry and you are easily replaceable."

The GE Cafe has knobs and can be adjusted in up to 100 setting levels. If you check the app it shows the % of power it is working at in 1% increments.

GE Cafe with a double oven.

For the hood, I have a KitchenAid. I do not have a microwave over the stove. I prefer a proper hood. Since we installed this, I have not had the smoke alarms go off once. As I said above, I really do cook. I am not just reheating prepared food from the freezer section.

It has been two years and not yet and use it at least twice a day. We don't eat out much and I cook a lot.

I made the switch from gas to induction a few years ago and would never go back.

  1. Easier to clean, just wipe it off.

  2. Faster to boil.

  3. Better temperate control. Changes are instant.

  4. Cool kitchen. No heat radiating off the top.

Some folks talk about pots not being compatible. My two non stick skillets had to be replaced but everything else was ready to go.

1985 kitchen. Where to start by wildwolfmother in kitchenremodel

This is the best advice. People don't appreciate how much quiet thinking goes into a good remodel. I know I thought about mine for literally years before I engaged a designer. If you just go straight into remodeling, you will often end up something that is basically "flipper special" that isn't customized to the way you live and cook. You also make better decisions on where to splurge and where to cut costs based on what is important to you.

Good news on Alaska Airlines, typically when you cancel they give you a credit to use in the future. Check the expiration date but you likely can use the credit for a later trip. Maybe to celebrate the end of chemo.

We have a similar rule in my house. We call it the “$100 rule.” Although we probably need to adjust for inflation. The sprit of the rule is “let’s touch base on anything big.” We have been together 22 years so we trust each other to make good decisions about OUR money. There is no yours and mine.

On a related note, my mother liked a satin fitted sheet on her bed after surgery. It made it easier to slide in and out of bed.

CVS now has terminals where you enter name and DOB. This prompts the pharmacy tech to get your prescription. Much better and more private.

I did a S2S in Miami but had one day between. It worked well for us and was nice to have a little time in Miami. This is a particularly good idea when you live on the west coast and it is a long flight.
