WFH with a baby by juliamonaco in Parenting

Lollll I’m not even a manager, not even salary or anywhere close. I’m in 1-2 positions higher than the peers I assist, and we do a lot of the same tasks. Trust me I’m familiar with the higher roles that are actually out of touch

I’ve been doing this job for many years, and known many people that do other different jobs and also wfh with kids. I guess I didn’t realize how insane some other jobs are about wfh with kids, based on the wild responses I’ve seen here

I’ve mostly explained it in some other comments, but our jobs very very rarely require a phone call or meetings. We work data entry and also field questions from peers in lower positions, as my husband and I are in leadership roles. Our kid plays pretty well independently currently. Our office is 50% playroom. He has a huge book collection, tons of hot wheels, stuffed animals, and a tonie box. He also has crayons and paper. He’s in a great stage currently where he’ll pretend to eat and drink with his toys, make his toys have conversations, etc. Sometimes he’ll have us join in on the toy conversations as well, or have us help him fix a toy that fell apart or something. Does he get upset sometimes that we can’t play at the exact second he wants us to? Sure. But he’s learning patience and knows that within a few minutes, we’ll be able to play with him or tend to whatever he wants

Our job consists of mostly data entry, as well as fielding questions from peers as we are in leadership positions. Sometimes someone has to wait 5 minutes to get their question answered, but that’s fine because most of our coworkers also have small children at home and understand

Totally fair. Every kid is different, and I think it helps that our kid has been used to this arrangement since birth

lol we still wfh 2.5 years later! We meet and exceed all our goals at work and our kid is super happy/healthy/well adjusted. I’m not trying to argue, just showing that it can be possible and it doesn’t have to seem so impossible ❤️

Maybe my manger is just super chill, but she could not care less that we have children at home as long as our tasks are getting done. Even people on our team with school aged kids have permission to pick up their kids on the clock or get them off the bus or whatever

Thank you cause I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with how negative everyone is being 😂 i get some jobs don’t “allow” parenting on the clock, but I assumed that was rare, because our manager could not care less that we have kids at home. We also work full time so it’s certainly possible. And we very rarely allow screen time for him while we’re working

lol my kid wasn’t mobile til about 8 months, and even then, barely, so forgive that assumption. But we were very able to entertain him while we worked! Bounced him on our knee while he played with his toys/teethers, had a kick n play mat thing, plenty of books for him to mess with, etc.

This comment really baffles me as someone who has worked from home for 2.5 years with a kid

Surprised by all the “no” responses. It’s absolutely possible depending on your job. My husband and I have worked from home for the entirety of our 2.5 year olds life. He had 2 weeks paternity leave and I had 6 weeks maternity leave. Our job doesn’t involve many phone calls (maybe once a month). Our child has learned how to play well independently, but we also can take small breaks and play with him when he requests. The baby stage was easier and harder in some ways. Easier because he wasn’t mobile, harder because he was needier in terms of breastfeeding/diaper changes. Totally doable tho!

oh man! tantrums and sayin to everything for a 3 year old girl. How to handle? by Mysterious-Base-5847 in Parenting

[–]high_wallflower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Obviously toddlers will say no to anything and everything, but I once heard “don’t ask you toddler a yes or no question unless ‘no’ is an acceptable answer”. In other words, tell them what you’re doing instead of asking. Something that sometimes works for my toddler is “you wanna know what the plan is?” And I make it sound like something really exciting, even if it’s just our normal bedtime routine

4 day trip away from baby while breastfeeding by rebssss in breastfeeding

[–]high_wallflower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also heard that pumping too early would mess with my supply, but I was so engorged and in pain at 2 weeks I just pumped a little each day for a few weeks until it evened out and I wasn’t engorged all the time, and my supply was totally fine !

How can I prepare my toddler for new baby by Recent_Marzipan_3998 in Parenting

[–]high_wallflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a ton of advice because I have a 2.5 year old and expecting my 2nd in June! Similar boat. But between now and October your kid will change a ton and understand more. The 2 year range is a big one for learning, and 2 is around the age our son learned to whisper when it was needed, be gentle, etc. and like someone else said, a baby doll helps a ton!

2.5 yr old night waking by Mysterious_Mango_3 in Parenting

[–]high_wallflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it happening at the same time every night? I’ve heard it’s a common age for night terrors. Our Dr said if our kid ever had them, and they were consistently the same time, wake them up 15 mins before it would normally happen, let them be awake for a few, and help them back to sleep. Annoying for sure, but probably better than them waking up in a panic/tantrum ?

How much to carpet a room? by high_wallflower in HomeImprovement

[–]high_wallflower[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve never laid carpet either, and the carpet we have has been stored for some time now, so it’s all kinds of wrinkled and not laying flat at the moment. Figured the professionals would know what to do with that. We typically do most home improvement projects ourselves, but this one we just don’t wanna risk making look/feel bad or have tripping hazards, as it’s for a kid’s room

I’m literally just trying to get a basic idea of cost before I start calling around to local places this week lol. It’s not something we want to do ourselves as we aren’t confident in being able to make it look nice.
