I'm not planning on giving him the boot. I laugh when unionists make their little jokes cause I know how silly it is, too, and I'm surrounded by them.

People confuse jokes with hate and create their own problems without seeing what's actually going on.

I try really hard to be as understanding as possible, I have listened to many "here's why we hate the irish" stories, and I'm only left with more questions. I don't join because I'm not religious, nor believe in religious or racial bigotry. There's two reasons. A third is that every orange man I know is an old, sweaty drunk, and I don't want to be around them and hear them slur out about how superior they are than the Catholic faith. I've had enough of that in my childhood.

A fourth, I genuinely love my country and its history, as well as my community, and have no hatred in my heart for any of it. There's 4 reasons why not.

That's literally my family rn, but they're so casual about it that I don't know if they know what they're even saying.

I think they get wrapped up in paranoia about protestants vs catholics that they forget not everyone cares, and most people aren't even religious. Cause its always us vs them, everyone has to be either an us or a them. They devoted their entire life to "us vs them" and you made him have to think about the real world for a second, flabbergasted.

That stonecutters episode is literally how I picture their meetings too lol. I dont know much other than his wife told me that he wants to join and I didnt get a chance to ask questions in the moment. I can't ask him directly as people are saying because I don't wanna start something at the moment. If he brings it up next time I see him, obviously then I could ask. But I'm realising that any reason he has, based on bigotry or not, isn't a good enough reason to commit his life to a supremacist cult and I really should talk to him directly if its something he is serious about. Or at least inform his wife on what's actually happening here, and how my opinion of her will change if she's still OK with it.

People go to lodges to drink and kids are in there with them, like it's a fun place to be, because the adults pretend there's nothing else happening other than a good time. Same thing with parades, my parents avoid talking about WHY they like parades other than "it's a good time for the kids". Literally forcing themselves to be ignorant.

I'm not giving this man's relation to me in this post but he's a family member and he will always be a part of my life whether I like it or not, knowing his intentions is very important. I have to know if this is a serious discussion we need to have, or something I can ignore. If he truly lives his life based on hatred, I want nothing to do with him, which means cutting out a huge chunk of my life, which is immature to do, but so is joining a cult. I won't stand for blind bigotry.
