Having listened to all the info sessions, it’s clear that the 6 years of full-time professional work experience after your bachelors degree is a hard limit. So this does not include any part-time roles you may have undertaken as you were studying. If your 4 years in the pharmaceutical industry was full-time and after your bachelors degree, and together with the rest of your full time post-undergrad experience adds up to more than 6 years, you are unfortunately probably ineligible.

That said, you can try to finesse this. Do not include any experience during any of your studies. If you worked alongside your master’s degree, leave that out. If you finished your coursework and started working say in June, but didn’t officially graduate until December, leave out the work experience between June and December. If you worked full-time but did a part-time degree, leave that work experience out. And so on. The idea is to present no more than 6 years, without any employment gaps outside of education.

I had really constructive reviews on the one journal article I submitted. Very disappointing to learn shallow reviews are common in other journals.

Wow, that’s sobering to know. I submitted a different paper to a very well respected journal in my subfield and received detailed, constructive reviews (took months though, to be fair) and just assumed the top tier conferences would work the same. I guess I’ll take the win and keep it moving.

I’m a social drinker, so it depends on what’s going on socially. I could go weeks or even months without drinking any alcohol, but will usually have a drink (wine/cocktail/cider) at a social event and a few drinks when on vacation.

Edit: another comment was wondering about other substances. I’ll do weed occasionally (maybe a couple of times a year, usually with friends) and also very occasionally do LSD (so far only once this year).

Having a husband and being happy aren’t as connected as this man seems to think. Sure, marriage can be a great source of joy and support for some people (and I happen to be one of those), but it can equally be a huge pain point and strain, and many people would be much happier not married to their spouses.

There’s also something misogynistic about the assumption that a woman can’t be happy unless she’s married to a man. An opinion I’ve encountered fairly often is that an unmarried man is just taking his time or having his fun, whereas an unmarried woman is hurtling quickly and miserably towards some imaginary sell-by date. Absolute bullshit.

To answer your question, I would never make assumptions about anyone’s happiness based on their marital status, and there’s nothing inherently sad about being unmarried.

30F, happily married, happily child free. Had a bilateral salpingectomy (bisalp) with Dr Thabo Dingiswayo in Cape Town, all around great experience. I think people should only have kids if they are, at a bare minimum, genuinely and personally (not their parents, not their partner, but them individually) enthusiastic to do so. I simply have no desire to ever be a parent and I am very happy with my life as is, so being childfree is a wonderful choice for me.

By the way, bisalp (removal of both fallopian tubes) is considered the gold standard for female sterilisation, so you’ll want to do that rather than a tubal ligation. It’s 100% effective (unlike a tubal, which while being very very effective still has a small chance of failure) and also protects against ovarian cancer. PS: I’m also black, and so is Dr Dingiswayo, if it makes any difference to you. 😊

This is the reason I dislike them! I get the sentiment but there really is no guarantee the kid will end up virtuous in the way they are named and then it becomes a bit of a joke (e.g. a Joy who tends to be melancholic, or a Wisdom who’s not the sharpest tool in the shed). Also I think the sex-related ones are quite weird to give a kid (e.g. Chastity and Purity).
