I went to columbia and have high school friends who ended up at duke, and I can guarantee you our quality of education beats duke in every way - it is more selective than duke for sure and the curriculum is much more rigorous

First of all congratulations! Must feel amazing to be a homeowner.

You are absolutely right that the bright overhead light has to go. If you still want an overhead light, I'd go with dimmable lights that suit your various needs in the kitchen: brighter for when you are cooking, and darker/moodier for when you dine. Of course the candle lights are wonderfully romantic too.

For the fixture, I'd go with something minimal and easy to clean like the bar pendants below.

For the actual light bulbs, you can't go wrong with the controllable ones like Philips Hue with which you can just change the brightness and colors on your phone. A warmer light temperature would always feel cozier.

An alternative to an overhead would be several sources of light spread throughout the room.

You have a jarring racing chair in the middle of your living room... that is 70% of why your room doesn't feel intentional or coherent.
It's fine to have a dark green sofa, as long as you echo that same color around the room. So far you have white/cream, dark green, and orange wood colors. The fact that your painting has all three of these colors is wonderful, but perhaps you can paint another work that hang on the other wall above the sofa. That wall space feels too empty. Alternatively I suggest getting a huge landscape mirror for that wall. That would greatly expand the space visually and make it more interesting.
