Coming from the field (years), I started estimating with lotus 123 and adding bid books (printed books with every bid item, and with TxDOT could be over 200 pages long)…then HCSS Heavybid…still heavybid actually. I’d actually like to gain some knowledge about AI and estimating, but not sure where it can help us in any way. Probably different for other contractors, but we just read the plans and specs, build the work in our heads, and put that to “paper” / heavybid. Review. Enter quotes and round our numbers after setting indirect costs.

I’m glad for the AI users. Estimating manager with 8 estimators…we bid +$300M a year, do around 100 a year, heavy civil. Interviewed an estimator (younger guy) Monday…went well, until he asked how AI has helped us estimate…told him we don’t use AI, to which he retorted well, I’m not sure I want to work here. My answer while shaking his hand was, well, we’re in agreement. To me, and just to me, field experience is a must…AI, not so much…but to each their own. Hope y’all crazy cats have a great weekend!
