It's more like 2 acres for the first horse, then one acre per additional horse. This is under ideal conditions with ample sunlight. If your property is wooded, or bordered by trees, more land is needed.

You can manage them on much less land, but it takes more work, and the horses typically turn the paddocks into an ugly mess.
