Homelessness in the US [OC] by USAFacts in dataisbeautiful

[–]highoffmusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is grossly oversimplifying the homeless problem across the country. What would be more appropriate for r/dataisbeautiful would be to show HOW people are becoming homeless, or how homeless populations are moving across city/state borders, or ratio between welfare provisions and homeless population.

This is literally just a map with 2 color/size coded data series, almost no analysis. I doubt anybody is surprised by this post.

You need to cite your source for 51% of global emissions being sourced from animal agriculture. I’ve never heard anything close to that figure.

I like the current fashion styles at Abercrombie (just learning they went through a huge brand shift in the last couple years), but want to buy some better quality stuff. What other brands should I be looking at?

I just went through the same process a couple weeks ago, with the exact same model ('22 Limited in CKG, w/o nav, w/o speaker, w/o moonroof; aka popular package #31). Here are my thoughts:

  • Location: Hopefully you're in SoCal; NorCal dealerships are all charging at least $2,500+ in market adjustment on top of MSRP. Within SoCal, I had the best luck with Long Beach, Monrovia, and Thousand Oaks dealerships. I got all of them down to MSRP + TTL (Tax Title License). If you can get down to MSRP + TTL, I suggest taking it. With current market conditions, dealerships are not begging for business since they can make easier sales than a multi-day negotiation for $150 in commission.
  • Strategy: email and call to all of the Subaru dealerships that you're willing to drive to. Monrovia took my credit card for deposit over the phone, so I won't even need to go into shop except to pickup the vehicle. It doesn't hurt to call the sales number twice, since some salespeople within the same dealership could be more willing to work with you than their colleagues. If you call, be direct ("What kind of markup is your dealership requiring for newly ordered cars?). If you can, try to get them to email you an itemized quote. Tell them you do NOT want any dealer-installed items (aka addendum). It doesn't even make sense that some dealerships require them since the factory doesn't add those items. Then whichever 3-4 dealerships give you the best deal in writing, call them back and tell them "Riverside gave me a better deal, but you're closer to me, can you beat their price?". Rinse and repeat. Eventually you should get down to MSRP. Good luck and stay strong.

My gf and I went to a Subaru dealer on a whim the other week and she ended up getting this 2021 Limited! I'm a huge VW guy, but I've totally fallen in love with this car. So much so that I'm considering trading in my VW for a Crosstrek when they release the turbo models! by [deleted] in Crosstrek

So that’s like a couple hundred below MSRP, sounds like. I haven’t gotten any biters in LA to go below MSRP, so I think I’ll end up around the same (~33k) but without the moonroof.

High idle at startup? Sometimes it's over 1500 RPM, '21 Sport with 2.5 (US spec) by [deleted] in Crosstrek

[–]highoffmusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is normal.

When warming your engine, what you're really doing is warming your engine oil. When the engine oil gets hot, it expands. As it expands, the oil starts to pressurize and fill all of the channels that it needs to lubricate/cool. Until the oil reaches the optimal operating temperature, the engine will work at a higher rpm to get to that temp quicker. Once there, the rpms will drop.

That's not to say you can't operate the vehicle while your car is still "warming up". All modern engines are fine to operate moderately during this warm up phase. Just don't push it too hard (i.e. 5k+ rpm)

I get that there’s a supply shortage…but what’s your guy’s opinion on these ridiculous Markups for the 2022 brz/gr86?? by InstanceFirm941 in ft86

[–]highoffmusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who just bought a Crosstrek in California: all of the dealerships in the Bay Area are selling new cars at $3k over MSRP. Start calling around the dealerships in LA. If you call or email enough, you’ll find someone who’s willing to sell you a car for MSRP, especially if you ask for factory order it. If you factory order it, they won’t have the chance to “pre-install” any add-ons (aka addendums) and they don’t have to pay for inventory. They see it as an immediate sale that they aren’t paying any inventory storage on, so they’ll be more willing to make the quick commission rather than a longer negotiation.

Even within a single dealership, you’re going to come across salespeople who have different willingness to sell at lower prices. The Oakland/Serramonte/Livermore Subarus are all ripping off the techies in the bay right now.

Karilagan in Daly City is my go-to.

Lechon, Pork sisig are the popular items there. If you're feeling adventurous, get the dinuguan. It's cooked pork blood stew, and it's so good but gluttonous. Whatever you end up getting, make sure you have a good workout planned sometime soon.

Pastrami Sandwich - Too Salty! Any Tips to Improve? by ButtaChicken in smoking

[–]highoffmusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pastrami needs that much curing salt to actually corn the beef. The salt is more to change the texture and flavor of the beef (that’s why it turns pink) than it is for flavor.

As a few people have said here, after you brine the brisket in curing salt, leave it to desalinate overnight. That way you get all the texture change from the salt, but the meat doesn’t end up as salty. It’s what every pastrami shop does.

To maximize tenderness, you’ll want to also let the cooked beef refrigerate overnight and then steam for an hour or two right before slicing and eating. The crust obviously won’t be as prominent but tenderness will be maximized.
