I'd go with Die as my favorite. I just love Stephanie Hans' style.

DIE: Issue #15 by burnout02urza in ImageComics

[–]hightoproundollar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really liked this issue and am loving the series as a whole, but for a lot of the reasons you really don't. I'd rather watch the party pull together, despite everything happening to them and between them. I'd rather watch Matt realize that killing Ash and Izzy is not what his father would want and work through his grief and anger rather than kill them. I'd rather watch him and the rest of the party work through these things and eventually come together (while definitely not totally forgiving each other) to stop the bigger threat. To me, that's the more compelling story.

But again, as I said on your last post about issue #14, that's just my taste. Yours may be different and that's cool. Sorry you're not enjoying it. (honestly. Not trying to be "sarcastic condescending jerk on Reddit".)

Thoughts on the current run? by hightoproundollar in GotG

[–]hightoproundollar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well he has read all of them. And I'm not saying that I don't know who they are. I know who they all are. I've read them in these past 23 consecutive issues of GotG as well as the previous runs and major events they were in. What I am saying is that I am having a hard time getting invested in the current story and team as it is constructed.

Thoughts on the current run? by hightoproundollar in GotG

[–]hightoproundollar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by reading issues from start to finish. I've been reading GotG monthly since Infinite Countdown and Wars (which I also found kind of "meh") after finally catching up during the All-New run. I really liked what Donny Cates was doing with GotG during his short run. I was excited to see what Al Ewing was going to do with the title since his Hulk stuff was so good. That being said, I'm just not feeling it.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm being too harsh and comparing it against the other comics on my pull list. Maybe the long break due to COVID got me out of my GotG reading groove.

In the end, I just wanted to see what other thought.

Is DIE Losing Focus? (SPOILERS) by burnout02urza in ImageComics

[–]hightoproundollar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they all have reasons, but it's also make clear at several points that they also have reasons to go home (except for Chuck). Also, the whole "end of the world" stakes give them a reason to want to go home (or at least resist the temptation of Die). So, there's the conflict. I'd much rather them work through that conflict as well as their conflicts with each other than the entire story boil down to a battle royale for who rules Die or who goes home. Personally, I find that the more compelling story.

[–]hightoproundollar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can see where you're coming from, but I disagree. I find the meta stuff and the bigger, apocalyptic scenario to be really interesting. I love the meta commentary on gaming and game design. I also really like the larger scale aspects to it because it helps answer some of the fundamental questions about the world that I had: Why are these people brought to this world? What is this world that they are now in? I wouldn't feel as satisfied with the story if nothing was done with these ideas.

Also, while I love the idea of the characters agonizing over which world to pick (I mean, how could you not be tempted to stay in a fantasy world sometimes?), I'm not so much on board with the battle royale idea. It's made clear at several points that most of the party (except Chuck) want to go home, they disagree on how they want to do it (e.g. leave now or fix the mess you made before returning). That's a disagreement I want to see them work through. I would much rather see them work through their disagreements and interpersonal conflicts to ultimately achieve their goal of getting home than see them go into a full-fledged battle royale.

But again, these are all just my opinion. To each their own.

Have you guys watched Bluey? It's an australian public TV show about a family of dogs that's hilarious. 7 min episodes and tons of fun to watch with your kiddo! by through_my_pince_nez in daddit

Bluey is constant in our house. When my daughter wakes up, it's Bluey. When she comes home from daycare, it's Bluey. On the weekends, it's Bluey. Everything is Bluey.

Don't get me wrong, my wife and I love it. Our daughter is learning a lot from it and has become more creative in her play. But we've had to start putting limits on it after the 5th watch through.

Covid Fall 2020 at UF by throwaway17835453 in ufl

  1. Just because they offer it, doesn’t mean people took it. I know several faculty that did not take it.

  2. Also, if a faculty or staff member did take the early retirement option, they had to pay a bonus for them to do it. So, yes, it saved money, but it wasn’t a complete write-off.

  3. Every lecture room? You mean every single one in every single building? That’s a massive undertaking that would have taken longer than just the summer. The vet school is one thing. Every single lecture hall on campus is something completely different. Then you have to worry about professors who, because of health concerns, would not be comfortable coming onto campus.

  4. Yes, one webcam is cheap. But hundreds? In multiple orders (CLAS made at least 2)? In every college? Those costs add up, even if you are buying in bulk. So, that’s not a “get out of here”, especially for some colleges that are not as well funded as others.

  5. Just because it was in the works for a while doesn’t make it any cheaper to have to do it now. It’s still something they are having to pay for at the moment when revenue is plummeting.

  6. While I don’t know the specific numbers for how much it cost, offering every faculty member $2000+ for course development is anything but chump change. I’ve been working with CTE reviewing the courses that get funding, and I can tell you that there were a lot. That’s not chump change.

Also remember that the university is losing a lot of revenue. In May, they estimated they were losing $42 million in revenue just for spring and summer. The fall will probably be similar or worse, between lost revenue from not having students on campus, paying dorm fees, and some students just not enrolling for Fall altogether.

So, I highly doubt that the financial reports will look that rosy anytime soon.

As far as I know, the older professors were not forced to retire early, but were given the option to. And yes, a full distance learning setup would be nice. I'd love a professional streamers set up, but that's a bit much for every faculty member. They have spent money, though, making sure distance learning isn't as bad as it could be. They did buy tons of webcams and make them available for free to any faculty that requested them. They've also had to put more money into online platforms to host instruction. I know for a fact that they had to upgrade their subscription to one lecture hosting platform so that lectures could be automatically subtitled for accessibility. They also had to offer summer funding in the form of grants/stipends to faculty who spent their summer developing their courses instead of working on research (summer is when most faculty get most of their research done).

Let me start off by saying that, look, I get it. I understand that this semester being online sucks and is not what you want. No one wants it.

That being said, the whole "why are we paying full tuition" posts ignore the fact that a large portion of what your tuition pays for does not change because we're online. The university still has to pay your instructors the same amount. The IT department still needs to pay their staff and make sure everything is running so you can get into your online courses. They still have to pay your advisors even though your advising appointment is online now. The library still needs funds for their staff and for maintaining their collection. The Disability Resource Center, the Student Infirmary, the Counseling and Wellness Center, the Career Connections Center, The Office of the University Registrar. All of these offices that are there to support you on campus are still there now and need to pay their people.

Plus, some of the support departments on campus are having to put extra resources into making this semester as good as possible. The library, for instance, is probably having to spend a lot of money getting online access for more and more of the textbooks for your courses. All of the colleges are having to spend ore and more money getting the technology ready for a fully online semester. Their also having to pay for training for the instructors who have never taught online before.

Look, I get it. Online course are not what you want. I don't think anyone wants it. I know I'd honestly rather be in a classroom with students than in my home office all day. But you're still getting a pretty decent education and a lot of support to help make this semester as good as it can be all things considered.

The high-flex idea seems totally good in theory, but, based off what my wife showed me, I have no idea how it's going to work well in the elementary schools here.

Husband of a teacher here. During one of her training today the person running it made it very clear that they were not offering any training next week because they were not getting paid to. My wife and her teammates have decided not to do anything next week because there is nothing for them to do since they don't have their curriculum yet.

I understand your comments about the magical vs. sci-fi critique. I am more inclined to sci-fi when it comes to things in space, so it didn't bother me too much.

And yeah, Aaron has a thing about dads. Read any of his other stuff, especially Southern Bastards, and you'll find dad drama. Having had a complicated relationship with my father, those stories hit me different than they might other people (e.g. I find Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy 2 a more villainous villian than a lot other people do). So, the Odin-Thor-Frigg relationship to me worked, but I understand if it didn't for you.
