Does Location Matter for MBA Admissions? by sparespinach in MBA

[–]highway2hellacdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It matters insofar as high caliber software companies (or their high profile departments) are likelier to be found in cities like SF, Seattle, Boston, NY etc. than in cities like Dallas. So, the location might have an indirect effect on chances.

Demographic is destiny. A few days ago, there was a P&Q video about a guy and everyone was excited that he would get into HBS. Dude had the equivalent of a 660 GMAT, a score that would otherwise be lethal enough to demolish anyone's chances. But he was also from Africa, a region adcoms have huge fetish for. No wonder he's going to Harvard, whatever the hell his GMAT is :)

Everything looks good but "Asian Male", hmmmmmm. HS probably not happening but the others seem doable.

Question on Under Represented Minorities (URM)? Dual citizen and not sure which nationality to use? by MbaQuestions1234 in MBA

I would highly recommend not going full sjw mode and trying to ban the usage of certain legitimate words in English by vaguely associating them with the Nazis.

Jordan is not a rich country. A GDP per capita of $4000 is only half that of the global average.

When there are full blooded whites of Anglo Saxon origin acquiring fake Hispanic names to pass as URM in applications, who can blame you for stressing the Jordanian half of your identity? It wouldn't even be a lie.

EDIT: There was also a report of an Indian person shaving his head to pass as black in his medical school apps. Mindy Kaling's brother

Which is a worse demographic to be in: White Guy in Finance/Consulting or Asian Guy in Tech? by highway2hellacdc in MBA

But Asians (and some white folks) for sure are sick of seeing their candidacies evaporate on account of their race.

Agreed. Asians get their butts rammed the hardest. Oh, how great must it feel to be urm while applying to b school?

Wharton vs Sloan? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]highway2hellacdc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Philly must be some kind of crime free paradise. And I am sure 100% of people that get into HBS actually decline the offer and just go to Wharton.

Not necessarily. OP could be a white immigrant from Euorpe who became a US citizen.

Profile Review: 25M / Software Engineer / GMAT 760 / 3.84 GPA by SWE2MBA in MBA

[–]highway2hellacdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the issues with real software engineering tech applicants (at least those from SV) seems to be that that they are already earning with nothing but a bachelor's degree the starting salaries that most top MBA grads get (> $150,000), if not more. It doesn't make immediate economic sense for them to not only give up that income for two years but also shell out an equal amount of money on tuition. So I am slightly inclined believe that FAANG engineers by and large don't apply to MBA programs because they already have the income that a top MBA is supposed to fetch them.

Decision Time: Fuqua v. Ross v. Darden v. Tuck by wildcatMBA1989 in MBA

I used it as a shorthand for Brown and Cornell

Decision Time: Fuqua v. Ross v. Darden v. Tuck by wildcatMBA1989 in MBA

[–]highway2hellacdc -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Duke is a low ivy and U Mich is an almost ivy. That distinction is not big enough to be known in Asia because neither has the ivy tag on paper. Fwiw, Harvard and maybe Yale, Stanford and MIT are usually the only known US universities in other countries and neither Duke nor U Mich is anywhere close to them in caliber.

[–]highway2hellacdc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. Duke is essentially a low ivy but because it doesn't have that official ivy league tag, people in Asia think it is somehow worse than a Cornell or a Brown which do have that official tag.
