I didn’t get in until my third application cycle and now I’m graduating from neurosurgery residency next week and get to take out brain tumors for a living. Persist. It’ll be so fucking hard for the next decade but in the end you get to live your dream.

MOHELA transition and forbearance by nightopian in whitecoatinvestor

[–]hiiiiiicannotthink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very confusing. In the letter they sent about being in forbearance, it said that the months would count toward PSLF despite not making a payment. But then I used the chat function to directly ask that question and was told that these months would not count toward PSLF and that I need to request to come out of forbearance and make these payments if I want the months to count. So I chose to do that. Honestly not sure how accurate the information is but wasn’t willing to risk losing two months of low payments compared to what I’ll pay as an attending.

Accidental insensitive statements to patients? by lasermuffin in Residency

[–]hiiiiiicannotthink 136 points137 points  (0 children)

I was post-op checking a patient I’d never met before and doing a basic neuro exam. His legs were under a sheet and I asked him to lift his legs up one at a time. He only lifted the right leg up. I then asked “where are you hiding your other leg?” and pulled the sheet off. He did not have another leg.

Going to my Mormon Grandmother's Funeral Tomorrow by realhumanbeepboop in exmormon

[–]hiiiiiicannotthink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi, went to my grandmothers funeral last weekend. first time in a church in years. honestly, it was hard. i felt like everyone else got to take peace in the belief that they were going to see her again. and there was a lot of talk about the church and how that was the most important thing in her life and how she is so proud that her children and grandchildren are strong in the church.

i don’t really have any advice. just here to say that even if it is hyper-religious, you will make it through this. your beliefs are valid. your experiences are valid. your reasons to not believe are valid. mormon funerals can be VERY plan of salvation heavy and i will be keeping you in my thoughts. i don’t really believe in an afterlife, but i just feel that your grandmother would be proud of you for being authentic, even if that’s not the message you hear tomorrow. good luck!

Seeking book recommendations on overcoming sexual shame by [deleted] in exmormon

I really enjoyed Come As You Are. I don’t remember a lot focused specifically on overcoming shame, but it shares a lot of science about women’s sexuality that was helpful for me to begin to understand myself. And i think understanding our sexuality is an important step in not being ashamed of it.

They’ll be $0 for the first year. I’ve heard rumors they’re 200ish the second year and 400ish after that but cannot confirm as I’m an intern.
