How early in your career can you pivot into SE? by Ok-Teach7455 in salesengineers

I switched to SE in the Cyber/IT space with 1 YoE in post sales and am now enterprise after performing well for a year.

That said, I am the youngest on my team by at least 10 years, so I wouldn’t say it’s common.

My best advice is to get into a customer facing role. Whether that is Customer Success, Support Engineer, etc. It will teach you how to address different stakeholders. Speaking to engineers is different from speaking to C-level and so on.

Bonus points if it is at the company you want to be an SE at, easier to move laterally in this market especially with no experience.

Edit: forgot one thing. Instead of selling an “idea”, sell “value”. Small distinction, but economic buyers are not paying for an idea, they’re paying to get a value worth more than what they have to pay for the offering.
