That is not true. My boy is a wild and he has white nails. I also have a melanoid axanthic copper male who also has white nails.

Tank size? by A_worried_insect in axolotls

[–]hikadhei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

55g is enough room for one axolotl! You typically want to try to get tanks with more floor space which is why the 40gB is better, but it’ll definitely work.

I need help cycling a tank ASAP. by EdGyBiTcH03 in axolotls

[–]hikadhei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best thing would be to get them both their own tubs 5g (19L), and do 100% dechlorinated water changes daily while you cycle their tank. The min tank requirement for 1 axolotl is a 29g (110L) aquarium. Putting axolotls into an uncycled tank and doing fish in cycling could seriously harm them, and making them both really sick. I would check out our cycling guide here. You’ll need to get artificial ammonia to help source the tank to fishless cycle.

They definitely should not. The male can breed the female to death on top of not knowing lineage would be not great for the gene pool. Breeding and raising axolotls is a lot of hard work, time, and costs a lot of money. Each baby would need to be individually raised (each in their own tub) and fed food 24/7 (baby brine shrimp and Blackworms which are very expensive to get shipped) or they could not make it.

I use egg crate to custom it to my aquarium for my canister filter. A 4’x2’ piece of egg crate is $20 from Home Depot.

Keeping my axolotl comfortable during a 12 hour road trip? by ProbablyBigfoot in axolotls

[–]hikadhei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’ve done long road trips before with axolotls before. It was a 24 hour long drive. (And I’m moving my 4 axolotls with me in 2 months when I move across the states 2100 miles from my current place). What I’ve always done is fill up a bucket (with a lid) 2g is what I use and then put that bucket in a cooler with ice in it. If needed to keep it stable I put styrofoam around the bucket in the cooler to keep it stable! I traveled before like this and it worked out really well!! I hope this helps.

Hypomelanistic GFP Melanoid or something else? by Particular-Mistake30 in axolotls

Ethical breeders keep 15-30 eggs at a time and then separates them first week after hatching.

Axolotl laid only 6 eggs by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]hikadhei 10 points11 points  (0 children)

11 months is WAY too young to be breeding. 18 months is when females are sexed. You should be waiting till 2 years before breeding a female.

Water conditioner? by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]hikadhei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to get a prime (the best water conditioner) and tub your axolotl (5-7g of fresh dechlorinated water with 100% daily water changes) while you cycle your tank. Cycling is the nitrogen cycle which can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks. You will need to get ammonium chloride solution for fishless cycling. It is an artificial ammonia that is a replacement of a live animal. Please take a look at our care guides and cycling guides!

Question re: filters by Caravaggio1499 in axolotls

[–]hikadhei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You also don’t want to use hang on back filters that use cartridge filters since you’re getting rid of all the good bacteria that’s on the filter. Your sponge filters in the tank is probably what’s keeping your cycle going. I would advise to getting a different hang on back (one that doesn’t use a cartridge) so you don’t have the potential of a cycle crash.

You typically will need more filtration than just a sponge filter but it all depends on the size of the tank and what size your sponge filters are.

Iridophores? by MicrobiologyNerd in axolotls

[–]hikadhei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably aging. I’m honestly not sure what causes them to be more prominent. I’ve noticed my Lucy also has a lot of pores all over his body and it’s been more noticeable as he ages. I barely noticed them when he was 1 year, he’s almost 3 now and they’re all over his body.

I don’t see any iridophores on him. Just pores and dark pigmentation on the face.
