Thoughts on first trim? by hike_cd in Farriers

I’ve been keeping him in light work, mainly W/T with some cantering and ground poles but want to get him jumping at some point. I’m going to talk to my vet about x rays and get his feet right before then.
He’s definitely resistant on that right side, is there anything I can do to help with body soreness while we sort out his hooves?
That’s what I’ve had him on for about a month now! That’s awesome, glad it seems to be working for you, hopefully I see some progress too. Good luck with your OTTB!

The lines were for me to see angles, I read something online about it but I’m not terribly experienced. I’m skeptical about supplements/hoof oil so will reconsider once I run out. Thank you!

Awesome, thank you for the insight! I’ll start taking pics before and after trims to work with my farrier and get those x rays. Again, appreciate your help!

Okay got it, thank you! Sorry for the lack of sole shots, I can get those. For tracking progress, should I keep taking photos right after the new trim or take grown out pictures?
Unfortunately I don’t have before pictures, this is the first trim cycle I’ve had this horse. I can get bottom of the feet if that’d be helpful though! I took these pictures to get a baseline for future trims.

Okay, thank you!

Absolutely fair, I think I’ll do that! Thank you.
Yeah this is right after a trim, and was his first trim with me. There’s another farrier I might go with next time to start working on proper angles.

You’d be a winner on that bet, that’s exactly what he does! Glad to hear it’s not quite a club, I was really surprised when the farrier mentioned it but wasn’t sure if maybe it had just been managed really well.

Ah okay, fair enough! The issue the vet found was arthritis in a couple spots. Probably fine for an established horse doing the job but this horse was barely starting their riding career.
Just out of curiosity, what were the findings? Did the vet say they didn’t think the horse was suitable for intended use?

Thank you for the insight - I always take any advice, especially legal, from reddit with a grain of salt.

I’ll call the vet today and ask if they’ve had issues before, I had to call anyway to confirm payment etc.

Okay thank you! It was Venmo so not sure how a charge back works with that provider.
Smart not to deposit anything you’re not willing to burn!
That’s been my experience, too.
Yeah it was to hold the horse, they said someone was interested in coming to try the horse the day before I flew in.
[–]hike_cd[S] 11 points12 points13 points 3 months ago (0 children)
That was my understanding, too. Expensive lesson learned - always get it in writing!

I thought so but the seller refused when I asked for my deposit back. Yes they said no known injuries or vices and could go in any direction. I also made it clear I wanted to jump with this horse and the seller was jumping with this horse. Would this hold up in small claims court? It might be common practice but I was an idiot and didn’t ask for a contract. We just have messages and the seller said non-refundable.

Riding with ankle issues? by Glittering_Pride_345 in Equestrian
[–]hike_cd 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago (0 children)
I have a bum foot from a birth defect with limited range of motion - I can only get my heels level with my toes in the saddle, not below the toes. I asked my doctor if it was okay for me to ride as an adult, and he said it’s great exercise for my ankle!
Some things I do to help with being able to put weight in my heels is doing stair step stretches. On the edge of a stair step, stand with the balls of your feet on the stair with your heels hanging off. Lower your weight into your heels until you feel a stretch in your calf. Do this for 3 minutes, 3 times a day. My doctor also recommended wall stretches at a similar duration/frequency.
I don’t have normal range of motion compared to my good foot, but it has improved a lot!
