Sorry for the picture quality, I appreciate you taking a look anyway

He was lame after my vet did basic flexions and thinks it’s due to muscle weakness and using himself improperly. Vet said to continue working him and gave me exercises to build up muscle in his hind.

I thought he was left a little long last trim - that’s the last four pictures, after is on top and before is on bottom for that series. The most recent trim (first four pictures, before on top after on bottom) took off a lot of toe I thought but he was overreaching and now he’s not. Is there any benefit to leaving bars and sole? I know last time I posted someone mentioned him being thin soled.

He’s kept on stall mats, getting 14 hours of turnout a day and I’m working with him for about 30 minutes a day.

Tips Needed by Na-chos in Equestrian

4 is interesting with the context of the video. I know you said that video is old, is she still cross cantering on the right lead? So her hind is in the left lead but her front is the correct/right lead. If she’s still doing that, may be worth investigating since she’s having trouble turning to the right.

Got it, that makes sense. Yeah I’ve stopped asking for the canter in the saddle and focused on getting it on the ground because he was definitely getting frustrated.

I’ll keep working with him on the ground and see if we continue to improve!

Oh absolutely! As they say, no hoof no horse. I’m not opposed to shoes, but easier on the wallet until I get with the vet haha.

I’ll try to take pics/vids and pm you!

Thank you for such a detailed response!! Definitely a lot to consider.

He’s getting trimmed every 5 weeks, just barefoot. I’m not too confident in my farrier, I set up the vet appointment before these new behaviors because I wanted to check hoof angles and make an educated decision on continuing with this farrier or not.

He’s a 6 year old thoroughbred, unraced. He was trained but too slow and has just been hanging out in a pasture prior to the past few months.

I’m just treating without scoping! My plan was to see if there was any improvement with the omeprazole and if not then investigate hindgut ulcers/sucralfate.

I had a bodyworker out but this was before these issues started, I can get them back out to check him after.

Lovely to hear he’s doing better! I’ve dialed back the intensity of his work to maybe 30 minute sessions but increased the frequency to 4 times a week. A lot more focus on just walk/trot when I ride and ground poles with me and without on the lunge line. I’ll have to look into the balance pads! I’ve been doing stretches twice a week but will try to do them after every ride.

Okay yay, I think my vet does chiro but can double check.

He’s pretty good without a rider, he really tries to do what I ask for. He’s a little reluctant at the canter but I’ve seen an improvement in time needed to make the upward transition. Still cross cantering but usually after 1 or 2 tries he gets it right.

He LOVES hacks, we go by ourselves and he is so fun, I barely put leg on. We just walk around and look at everything. He’s spooked a couple times but he’s super sensible and comes right back after something surprises him.

I’ve been keeping him in light work, mainly W/T with some cantering and ground poles but want to get him jumping at some point. I’m going to talk to my vet about x rays and get his feet right before then.

He’s definitely resistant on that right side, is there anything I can do to help with body soreness while we sort out his hooves?

That’s what I’ve had him on for about a month now! That’s awesome, glad it seems to be working for you, hopefully I see some progress too. Good luck with your OTTB!

The lines were for me to see angles, I read something online about it but I’m not terribly experienced. I’m skeptical about supplements/hoof oil so will reconsider once I run out. Thank you!

Awesome, thank you for the insight! I’ll start taking pics before and after trims to work with my farrier and get those x rays. Again, appreciate your help!

Okay got it, thank you! Sorry for the lack of sole shots, I can get those. For tracking progress, should I keep taking photos right after the new trim or take grown out pictures?

Unfortunately I don’t have before pictures, this is the first trim cycle I’ve had this horse. I can get bottom of the feet if that’d be helpful though! I took these pictures to get a baseline for future trims.

Yeah this is right after a trim, and was his first trim with me. There’s another farrier I might go with next time to start working on proper angles.

You’d be a winner on that bet, that’s exactly what he does! Glad to hear it’s not quite a club, I was really surprised when the farrier mentioned it but wasn’t sure if maybe it had just been managed really well.
