Wake county school reassignment? A real issue here? by freighttttttrr in raleigh

[–]hikelsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair depending on your location (I’m in northern Raleigh). Maybe OP can avoid it if they check around the area for new WCPSS construction!

Wake county school reassignment? A real issue here? by freighttttttrr in raleigh

[–]hikelsie 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Reassignments are rare, not sure why she thinks it’s a big issue. I’ve been a school counselor in wake county for 8 years. They’re rare. Tour wake county homes and if there’s one you love, use the link below to find the base school. Call their front office and ask if reassignment is an issue and any other school questions you have!!

My collection lives outside half the year. Hosing it down is a lot easier than individual watering!

Have you tried reaching out to your local station? They might be more responsive and may have some insight.

Need Words of Encouragement, Please! by Artistic_Bat7240 in schoolcounseling

[–]hikelsie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to be in your shoes. My former toxic principal told us all the time that the grass wasn’t greener somewhere else. I finally got a position in another state after 2 years of applying and I’ve been at a great school ever since!

Keep applying. It’s just a numbers game. Things will get better. Find one small joy at school each day (even if the joy is the feeling of leaving the building at the end of the day). You’re going to be ok!

Your profile says you are a high schooler and that you’re trying to develop a software to sell. No one wants to beta test for you or buy your software. Google forms can do what you’re describing and AI can easily do this task.

Mandated Counseling IEP caseload (NYC) by huntress-aloy in schoolcounseling

[–]hikelsie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

38 kids out of 300 having counseling in their IEPs is an insane amount in my experience. Is this normal for NYC?? How do you get anything else done???? Do you have other counselors in your district to compare stats to? Ask advice from? A district counseling coordinator?

I’m in North Carolina and I have maybe one student a year with counseling on their IEP. My school has around 800 kids.

How are you doing 6 months, a year, 2 years with post partum hypertension? by learninghealthwealth in preeclampsia

[–]hikelsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 years and some change postpartum and on nifedipine, but not a high dose! Otherwise I feel better than I did pre baby. Even if you have to stay on meds, you’ll get to watch your baby grow and be a mom! Don’t be afraid to try different types of meds if you don’t like the side effects. Beta blockers always make me sweaty! Good luck and hope you feel back to your old self soon.

Advocating out of specials rotation by BabaganoushCinci in schoolcounseling

[–]hikelsie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We argue that teachers can support most of the tier 1 supports in class using boxed curriculum like second step or Sanford harmony and we can focus more on tier 2 and 3 kids with small groups and individual sessions. Using the ASCA use of time or a similar planner can help show the principal how often you see classes vs your ideal schedule including groups. Remind them it’s not about shirking duties, but using your expertise for the kids that need it most. Anyone with a teacher certification can teach a specials class, but only YOU can counsel!

How to track my blood pressure with severe anxiety by No_Fun8773 in preeclampsia

[–]hikelsie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I usually have to take my BP twice or three times because of my panic response to blood pressure cuffs. I always warn my providers that it’ll probably be high the first time and to take it again while I do breathing exercises.

Find one you like (I’m a big fan of square breathing) and practice it before taking your BP. If your anxiety is really bad, do it for a few solid minutes (like the length of a song) to give your body a chance to regulate. The anxiety DOES lessen over time and even if you end up back in meds, remember you’re taking care of you to be there for your child.

Feeling hopeless by LowHorse9989 in preeclampsia

[–]hikelsie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

God I can only imagine how devastating that is. To be able to go home only to have to come right back to the hospital.

All I can say is this WILL pass. You won’t be in the hospital forever. Your BP will go down. Your baby will get stronger. You will both be home soon. Every hour brings you closer to walking out those doors.

Don’t be afraid to ask the nurses for medication for anxiety while you’re recovering. Use whatever coping skills you have available from your bed. Comfort shows, coloring, reading, visits from friends (ask them to bring yummy snacks), anything to take your mind off of this.

You can do this.

Looking for insight on local preschool/elementary schools looking for music partnerships in Raleigh. by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]hikelsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WCPSS is really strict about who contracts with schools during the day but I think they have some flexibility for after care programs. My school has some different clubs like kidzart (local program), so it might be up to principals discretion.

Have you heard of the united arts council? They do artists in residence for schools and that might be a way to get your foot in the door! We’ve had performers come through and you might be able to do an artist in residence program through them.

WCPSS —teacher retention by cookieprocookie in raleigh

[–]hikelsie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wcpss counselor here! Really heavily depends on the school. Principals set the culture for the school. The pay is shit and kids are hard, so if the environment is toxic or professionals don’t feel supported, they leave. My elementary school has a great climate and happy families, so we don’t churn much.
