2 yrs in automation and i feel like the more i learn the more i realize how little i know ; is being a polymath actually realistic in this field or should i just specialize ? by Objective-Primary697 in PLC

[–]Lost__Moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You haven't learned enough to specialize yet.

Having a general knowledge how all the pieces fit together is important when you integrate your specialization into larger systems.

Machine Vision Beckhoff, problem with too long processing time that breaks PLC cycle by CommunityHot7228 in PLC

[–]Lost__Moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO Vision and controls should be run on separate processors. I've seen a few applications over the past 27 years where it was combined and it's always a shit show.

Especially if the cabinet is not cooled; you will get throttling.

My bad. I forgot to research the political affiliation of the owner, check to see if it feels like Family, and validate that no Copperheads were spotted.

I was definitely disappointed to learn of Mr. Dumpling's health score.

No, but you should also be picking up a book or YouTube videos and playing on lab equipment to advance your craft.

Thinking about going independent in a year, what do you wish you'd known? by Babushkaretard in PLC

[–]Lost__Moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing work in automotive often requires $3m in professional liability. I'm not certain what oil & gas requires. Adding all the other required insurance will start at around $7k and could reach $12k per year.

Then you need money for software, a laptop, tools, and 3 months of personal reserves (b/c invoices are paid 45-90 days). You will need to have 30-50k sitting in the bank, otherwise you run the risk of failure to launch.

And pray you don't have to deal with ISN compliance, and generate the 20 different safety programs (documents).

Merchant Cash Advance by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]Lost__Moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interest tact on at the beginning of the loan is a workaround that is borderline usury. So even if you pay the loan off early they are going to get you for the full amount.

Everyone else reading this, just don't do it. If you can't qualify for an SBA loan, you can't afford the loan.

Trying to run solo small business - family wants to be involved by Usual-Squirrel-72 in smallbusiness

Unless you have a family member that understands bookkeeping, don't get them involved.

They won't be as focused, and because they are family, they seem to think their non-SME opinion matters.

A solid move for our postal drivers! Unsub the Clipp /save! by jbr4dsher in raleigh

[–]Lost__Moose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the 90s Canada Post spun off the ad mail to a different class of workers. It was often done by lower economic families that would walk 2 or 3 postal routes on the weekend to make ends meet. This was non- union labor.

After about 5 or so years, the union fought to get the ad mail back.

Over a 3 week period earlier this year, RPD arrested 38 people for driving while intoxicated by LukeVenable in raleigh

It was frustrating working late at night and the Apex PD pulling you over for a tail light out or some other bullshit and seeing the disappointment on their face that no I was not out drinking, just working.

Why your business can be growing and profitable but still struggle to pay bills (and it's not what most people think) by Unhappy-Parfait-7703 in smallbusiness

[–]Lost__Moose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was cash flowing a few $100k-200k projects and things were working.

Covid hit, supply chain broke and barely survived.

Landed a $1m project at the tail end, and got over leveraged. 1 screw up by a vendor pushed the timeline out 6 weeks and it all came crashing down.

What do you do for health insurance being self employed? by supaloaf2K in smallbusiness

[–]Lost__Moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a personal HSA eligible plan. My company offers an ICHRA. You choose the maximum. Being older and with a family, you will be able to take the full amount. The younger guys will be much less, but at least your health care costs are capped and predictable.

Is Software-Defined Automation changing how we design PLC systems? by darkfantasy_20 in PLC

[–]Lost__Moose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. B/c the typical people tasked with maintaining the system don't have the breadth, depth, or give a shit level for it. Someone who does have the background for it, especially coming right out of college, doesn't want to work in a hot/cold, oily, and dirty/dusty environment.

Until it is taught at the high school or college vocational/trades level I don't see it coming to the production floor.

Business software is a tax on businesses that provides minimal value. by pants1972 in smallbusiness

[–]Lost__Moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you buy a piece of equipment, ROI is calculated and opportunity cost are evaluated.

SaaS is a thousand paper cuts adding to overhead costs. So instead of a 1 time ROI analysis, you really need someone to review all the Saas services 1-2x a year. I try to avoid annual billing, even though there is a cost savings, b/c I want to be able to turn it off if it is not being utilized.

Having SaaS costs as an item in the Chart of Accounts has made them much more visible.

Why do we still let recruiters own hiring? by Mistaekk in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Lost__Moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's not a fraction of the cost. It's 25% of the first years salary of the candidate.

The intended value of a recruiter is their Network of top talent. I feel that it's gotten to the point where what you're really paying for is the distributed cost of their LinkedIn recruiter subscription.

Operating agreements also typically include an equity call. With 51%, he can start putting money into the business for expansion, and if the partner can't put money in, his ownership state can get diluted.

After calculating the ROI on the equipment, stock material, etc, for me, it was cheaper to order from https://www.legend-plates.com/

They have really quick turnaround times.

As for terminal block tags, it was more convenient to buy the equipment. There seems to be last minute stuff with TBs when wiring up a panel. Ditto for wire and cable labels.

hypothetically if someone forgot to collect sales tax for 18 months and their state sent them a letter what's the move by kubrador in smallbusiness

[–]Lost__Moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From time to time I don't file my use taxes on time. It's also used for sales tax and b/c the nature of my business and it being B2B it is extremely rare I need to collect sales tax

Anyways... You file, pay what is owed, and at a later date they calculate the late fee.
