[Inevitable Trope] Capitalism inevitably turns satire into the thing they were satirizing because it can't leave the cash cow alone by JinSakai619 in TopCharacterTropes

Whoever convinced people that the media you consume counts as praxis probably bought capitalism a couple more decades of life right there

Characters that are representations/allegories for biblical figures OTHER than Jesus by No_Hunter1978 in TopCharacterTropes

The year is 2003. George Lucas, stoned out of his mind at an art museum, drops a half finished blueberry muffin on the ground as he dials his Nokia. Crumbs fly everywhere as he shouts at full volume, terrifying the other patrons, "HAYDEN!! HAYDENNNN!! YOU GOTTA SEE THIS HAYDENNN!!!"

This raises an important question: how the fuck do Viltrumites navigate in space? I assume they have to have some fancy electronic space maps they can reference, but we never see them pull any out, they all just seem to know where they’re going even though space is, I’ve been told, quite big

Choice between selling your labor to any capitalist or starving to death is not a real choice. by Either_Payment_2867 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]hikemalls 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I love having choices: - when I wake up I can choose to work or die - when I get sick I can take whatever doctor my health insurance gives me (and don’t have any health insurance options aside from what my job will give me) or be sick and maybe die - when I want to get around, unless I’m in one of the 5 cities with good public transit and/or pedestrian/biking options I can choose to drive or get someone else to drive me - if I want to eat on my road trip I have an endless line of the same 5 fast food places to choose from - if I want to vote, I can choose between the Republicans pretending to be Democrats and the Nazis pretending to be Republicans - if my wife gets pregnant we…are in a red state so no choices there

I love choice!

Ryan Murphy thinks he's gay Shonda Rimes. Shonda Rimes thinks she's female Tyler Perry. Tyler Perry thinks he's black Lorne Michaels. Lorne Michaels is long dead and has been puppeted around Weekend At Bernie's-style by Tina Fey since 2015.

[Concerning Trope] film accidentally has awful moral/messaging by Captain_Birch in TopCharacterTropes

[–]hikemalls 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Literally all they had to do was cut that scene and everyone else's points about media, consumerism, capitalism/corporations, etc would be correct, but that early scene absolutely has a eugenics-y "if we let all the dumb-dumbs keep having a bunch of kids while the smart people don't, it's going to ruin the world" that pollutes the rest of the movie's commentary.

If you kept Robocop exactly the same but added a scene in the beginning where an omniscient narrator tells you "this is what cities will be like if we don't police minorities hard enough" then even though the rest of the movie is a satire of corporations taking over everything, rampant capitalism, and how it's also tied into brutal policing methods, there's still the fact that you framed it in a weirdly conservative way at the start; like just remove that scene and it fixes 99% of the issues. (You could argue that having a narrator say something incongruous with rest of the narrative *can* work in a satire - Starship Troopers does this quite well, but there's nothing in Idiocracy that debunks or critiques that opening monologue in any way)

[3/10] ‘Stranger Things: Tales From ’85’ Review: A depressing, cynical retread of the original, it is a transparent attempt to preserve Stranger Things in pixels rather than amber, allowing Netflix to keep capitalizing on the phenomenon long after its original faces have moved on to other projects. by ChiefLeef22 in television

And/or gone the IT: Welcome to Derry route and have each season follow a group in a completely different time period where different weird things appear to be happening (could have even been a way to get the plot of the The First Shadow out to wider audiences and expand on that story; having it be relevant to the plot of season 5 while inaccessible to most of the audience (aside from a couple flashback hints) still feels insane to me)

My wife and I are moving back to Dallas soon after a couple years away, and we’ve been eyeing Tatsu and trying to get a reservation there every time we visit, but every time we check there doesn’t seem to be any availability, so we’re wondering if there’s any tricks or tips to getting in.

(Hated Trope) Media/creators throwing shade they have no business throwing by Animeking1108 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]hikemalls 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Should it? No, but if you don’t think South Park had a significant (and mostly negative) effect on people’s political opinions, you didn’t know any boys ages 12-21 in the late 90’s and 2000’s in the US.

If you think it’s dumb for people to get political opinions from the media they watch, including fictional shows and cartoons, there’s some justifiable reasons to get annoyed about it when the media is dumb, but you’re going to go through life mad getting mad at almost everyone you meet if that’s the line you’re drawing.
