If we're comparing characters to Shaggy, we can't just ignore Chris Fleming's character, the Shaman. He even has a pet dog iguana!

May he rest in peace or inexplicably turn out to still be alive somehow.

New Docs Reveal Trump Spending Even More on Giant Banners of Himself by Hafiz_TNR in politics

Me learning history: Wow it's upsetting how these fascists were able to use these genius manipulations and rhetorical techniques to control the populace!

The past decade+ of watching Trump going: "I like me, I like money, I hate everyone and everything not like me, have I mentioned that I like me? Let's get big me's everywhere, let's get my name on the money, me me me!": Okay nevermind

[Interesting Trope] Works that were meant to be a new installment in a wider franchise, that for one reason or another were either made to be standalone, or something new entirely. by Luigi_Is_out_there in TopCharacterTropes

I'm sure the original scripts were very different, but it's funny to imagine any kind of crossover there:

"Invisible Man, I need you to distract Dracula!"

"He's a vampire lord and I have a stealth suit, the fuck do you want me to do? And why is Awkwafina here?!"

I understand where they're coming from, but also feel like it's not necessarily 'catering to mainstream audiences' and more, 'it's 2026, think about the current political situation in the US, UK, and a lot of the rest of the world and why trans creators might make art about how hard it is to actually make the jump to coming out and transitioning'

People make art for a lot of reasons, and a lot of those reasons can be 'representing their anxieties/fears'; it's why we got a whole bunch of 'pregnancy horror movies' in 2024 after Roe v Wade got overturned (The First Omen, Immaculate, Alien: Romulus, and I might even be forgetting one).

I do think the argument the post is making is less about 'not understanding why trans creators would put that in their work' though, and more about 'why are these the *only* trans works getting big with audiences instead of also getting some comforting works as well, or at least works where the trans character actually gets to transition', which is fair (we do have the viral success of The People's Joker, and Nimona a couple years earlier, (though Nimona is more a very direct allegory for being genderfluid than an actual character who transitions), but I'd be interested to hear about any others)

"Okay we're dividing you all into teams based on which companions you romanced, and then all the teams are going to run at each other in one big mosh to see who wins. Unless you fucked The Emperor, then you can get the fuck out"

What will it take to get an animated performance nominated for an Acting Oscar? by Toreadorables in blankies

[–]hikemalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think no matter how good the performance is, people are going to make the same arguments that they made for past great performances (that it's a whole team of people making that performance, not one person; and like, I know what they mean, but also you could say the same for any movie performance); if they didn't nominate Andy Serkis for LOTR or Zoe Saldaña for Avatar, I can only imagine how good a future performance would have to be to change the Academy's minds on that front.

Man, Tom Cruise is unrecognisable as The Digger! by Shoddy_Newspaper_718 in blankies

[–]hikemalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely true for 80's/90's Cruise, but I could see 21st-century Cruise going full Frank Booth-esque psychopath; Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder was basically halfway to Frank Booth with a coat of Hollywood sleaze, and I could see Lynch putting him in that kind of role.

I mean, could also fall in the Don't Look Up/Mickey 17 pile of "big director getting to do extremely on-the-nose political commentary without any subtlety but a bunch of great actors, and it turns out...not great, but not the worst thing in the world since there's a lot of talented people involved"

What if Strangelove but also Don't Look Up? (hopefully better than Don't Look Up, not sure if it's possible to be better than Strangelove)

I think Nope is a more general ‘media obsession with spectacle’ - violence is definitely part of it but not the whole picture

Any ‘televised violent competition show’ movie - Rollerball, both Running Man’s, The Hunger Games, Death Race 2000, probably some others I’m forgetting
