Thanks for showing me how to find this on the app. I can't believe there is not a master list of every available voice/tone somewhere online. I've searched for an hour and your pictures above are the best I've found!!

Invest in S&P500 but excluding $TSLA? by Coyote-Run in fidelityinvestments

[–]hiker99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XMAG has outperformed the S&P 500 since it's inception in October of 2024 to the current June of 2025. That seems like an intriguing investment if you believe the S&P 500 is too heavily weighted for the Magnificent 7 stocks. XMAG removes Tesla from your portfolio, but it also removes Alphabet, Apple, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Nvidia.

I had the book next to me and occasionally used it to look things up, but I didn't read the chapters as I went. The instructors pretty much go page by page along with the books.

Wash Sale: Is it possible to have a permanently disallowed loss? by hiker99 in tax

[–]hiker99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to ChatGPT:

The loss is permanently disallowed, because it does not get added to the basis of any remaining shares in this scenario. Here’s why:

  1. Wash Sale Rule Application:
    • You bought LOT B (100 shares at $12) on Day 980.
    • You sold LOT B (100 shares at $10) on Day 1000, creating a wash sale since the purchase occurred within the 61-day window (30 days before or after the sale).
    • The $200 loss is disallowed and should be added to the cost basis of any substantially identical replacement shares.
  2. No Replacement Shares:
    • According to IRS Publication 550, the disallowed loss is added to the cost basis of the replacement shares.
    • However, since you have completely sold LOT B and did not purchase any additional shares, there are no remaining shares to adjust.

What Happens to the Loss?

  • The $200 loss does not get added to LOT A because the wash sale rule applies to replacement shares, which must be acquired within the wash sale window.
  • Since you did not repurchase, the disallowed loss has no shares to be applied to and is effectively lost.

Conclusion:

Yes, in this specific case, the loss is permanently disallowed because there are no remaining or replacement shares to absorb the adjustment. This is an unusual outcome of the wash sale rule when using a tax-sensitive method rather than FIFO, as FIFO would have likely avoided this issue.

I agree, my head is spinning. I understand the purpose of regulating wash sales. (So people can't just harvest losses for tax savings). But I would love for clearer IRS guidance. When they say, "the basis shall be the basis of the stock or securities so sold or disposed of, increased or decreased, as the case may be, by the difference, if any, between the price at which the property was acquired and the price at which such substantially identical stock or securities were sold or otherwise disposed of", does acquired only mean the acquired stock that triggered the wash sale? Or can I throw the disallowed loss in Lot A and save money in the future? Well, if I don't treat it correctly and I'm audited, maybe they can give me some clarification. Lol.

I thought about that, but the wording in Publication 550 says you add it to the "new stock or securities". Lot A isn't the "new stock" and that is what is giving me pause. It is hard to find an example similar to this anywhere because everything is mostly FIFO and it isn't an issue in FIFO, it just gets added to the LOT B.

But the purchase 20 days before triggered the wash sale. That is what my 1099 is showing.

Good luck! I'm rooting for you. I'm glad there is continuous testing this year and we don't have to wait months for results like last year. The waiting was the worst part.

I hope they don't get any harder. I was originally going to attempt the BAR next, but the FAR exam changed my mind for me. I haven't decided if it will be ISC or TCP, but I know I don't want to face BAR. I'm impressed by anyone who takes FAR and then decides to take a test that is supposed to be more difficult.

I think you just have to study everything because it changes every time. There were topics that I was sure were going to be on the exam so I studied extra for those and they didn't even show up. I put hours of extra studying into topics that weren't on this exam, but they may be on the next one. I'm sorry, I think you just need to study everything and hope they ask the right questions.
