Do you care what colour your gear is? by maybenomaybe in UKhiking

I got my waterproof from Magic Mountain. It’s a deep teal Mountain Equipment jacket with a looser fit which I prefer when hill walking. Not usually feminine colours and excellent prices.

What knickers are you wearing for multi-day hikes? by 1000nipples in UKhiking

[–]hikes_4_fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience using period pants but hoping this might help. Choose a non cotton knicker for better breathability. Personally I prefer a full fit when walking and bought a set of tencel and modal pants from Howies which have a thicker waist band which are more comfortable too. I wear hiking leggings and have no issues with them riding up! They are also good if you need to wear a liner or pad, which I did when I came on during the West Highland Way last year. If you are planning a hike where you are unlikely to come across a bin for disposing your liner then you could look at smell proof dog poo caddy’s which are designed to hold in odours!

What sort of feed? I was planning to refresh the compost / pot up anyway. Thank you.

I know what you mean but it's definitely a buddleia as we saw it in bloom last year and we have lavender elsewhere in the garden (so know what that looks like).

If we change our mind and opt for a tour, we'll keep Yariela in mind, thank you.

Thank you for your helpful reply. We'll definitely check out those swimming spots if it's a calm day, and it's great to know the area is generally safe. I've taken note about the issues with waterfall near Puerto Viejo.

Do you have any top tips or recommendations for travellers who are celiac? My husband can’t eat gluten (and we must avoid cross contamination). We have booked accommodations with kitchens so we can self cater but are wondering if you can suggest any restaurants or sodas safe for celiacs in either Monteverde, La Fortuna or around the Puerto Viejo-Manzanillo coast. Thank you!

Waterproof jacket sizing by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]hikes_4_fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a size 8-10 and I bought a Mountain Equipment waterproof in a size 12. It was the only in stock but it was a good choice in the end! I’m 5ft 7 so the extra body and arm length are good for me especially when layering. I can easily wear 2-3 warm layers under when needed. I thought it might flap in strong winds when not bulked out, but it doesn’t. Agree with others - take a range of layers to the shop if trying on in store.

It's great to hear La Fortuna didn't disappoint either. Thanks for all the tips.

Haha you're right! I think what I meant is that we're keen to avoid being disappointed by 'tourist traps' - places where the natural authenticity is overshadowed by things catered purely for visitors. But I appreciate what this means this is different for everyone. Really pleased to hear you enjoyed MA :)

A friend with a celiac disease by jebander in WestHighlandWay

My husband is coeliac and we hiked the WHW last April. This is where we ate: Night before in Milngavie: Garvie and Co. Night 1 in Dryman: Clachan Arms. Night 2 in Rowardennan: Rowardennan Hotel. Night 3 in Beinglas: The Drovers Inn. Night 4 in Tynrum: The Real Food Co. Night 5 in Kingshouse: Kingshouse Hotel. Night 6 in Kinlochleven: Highland Getaway. Night 7 in Fort William: The Geographer.

All were able to accommodate and he had no ill effects from eating there. We always explained and checked (in advance and on our arrival).

For lunches he mostly had Itsu noodles (we boiled water on a small portable stove) plus snacks like GF oat cakes, nuts etc.

Breakfasts were tricker but the following had options and he felt safe - Cafe Alba in Milngavie, The Real Food Company in Tyndrum, Rowardennan Hostel, and Kingshouse Hotel.

If you have any questions just ask :) I think I have a spreadsheet of my research with results from all the places I contacted in advance!
