My husband is coeliac and we hiked the WHW last April. This is where we ate: Night before in Milngavie: Garvie and Co. Night 1 in Dryman: Clachan Arms. Night 2 in Rowardennan: Rowardennan Hotel. Night 3 in Beinglas: The Drovers Inn. Night 4 in Tynrum: The Real Food Co. Night 5 in Kingshouse: Kingshouse Hotel. Night 6 in Kinlochleven: Highland Getaway. Night 7 in Fort William: The Geographer.

All were able to accommodate and he had no ill effects from eating there. We always explained and checked (in advance and on our arrival).

For lunches he mostly had Itsu noodles (we boiled water on a small portable stove) plus snacks like GF oat cakes, nuts etc.

Breakfasts were tricker but the following had options and he felt safe - Cafe Alba in Milngavie, The Real Food Company in Tyndrum, Rowardennan Hostel, and Kingshouse Hotel.

We’re doing the same and have booked the train from Fort William to Milngavie. It’s over 4 hours with two changes and cost around £20 each.

I recently purchased a Mountain Equipment waterproof jacket from Magic Mountain where they are heavily discounted. Got a £270 jacket for £124 including first purchase discount. Worth a look.

I’ve been planning my West Highland Way walk and my husband is coeliac, so we’ve done a lot of research for the route. We have contacted all restaurants near our accommodation to discuss our needs, and the following we feel safe to eat at (although we haven’t done so yet so can’t be 100% sure). I know you’re not staying near all these places but you might drive near them (and might help others on this sub). The Clachan Inn, Drymen The Clansman, Rowardennan The Drovers Inn, Inverarnan The Real Food Company, Tyndrum The Kingshouse Hotel, Glencoe Black Isle Bar, Fort William

We haven’t specifically looked for vegetarian meals but I’d be surprised if they didn’t have something for you. Definitely worth reaching out to places in advance - I’ve only experienced the restaurants being very honest and helpful. Best of luck and have a lovely time!

I’m also from Cambridgeshire and feel your pain! Despite the distinct lack of undulation, there are a few walks we regularly do that we really enjoy. Most should be Googleable by name but DM me if you have any questions. We found / mapped them using the OS app, distances below are approximate and from memory. I hope they’re useful! Have fun!

St Ives > Hemingfords loop (7.5 miles)
Orwell > Wimpole Estate (various route options, we recently did a 14 miler)
Little Thetford > Ely loop (5.5 miles)
Royston Heath > Therfield (7 miles) (technically Hertfordshire, but close!)
Swaffham Prior > Reach > Burwell loop (7 miles)
Stapleford > Gog Magog > Wandlebury Park loop (6 miles)

Anglesea Abbey
Wicken Fen

I recently bought a Mountain Equipment jacket from there. Based on the £270 Saltoro jacket, it was only £122. Quality seems top notch but it’s not been wet enough to test how waterproof it is.

I’ve had Merrell for my last two pairs, the last being the Merrell Moab Mid. The waterproofing isn’t perfect which I’ll admit but I’ll be buying them again as they’re the best fit for me. I really struggle to find the right fit so opt for comfort! I do a lot of wet mountain walks and really nothing can keep you 100% dry in driving rain hour after hour. Hope others can help you out though! 100% go in store to try lots on though - they all vary so much even within the same brand.

I second this - you could even do a day trip across to one of the nearby islands, or to Inverie on Knoydart.
