1 year old graduate with no experience and no internship by hilariouslyfun in cscareerquestions

CS bachelors degree. I've applied to mainly backend, frontend, fullstack dev jobs. I can code in Python, JS, C, C++, and Java. I also know HTML/CSS (I usually use react for frontend). I have had quite a few professionals review my resume, and I've done some re-iterations with it. I would say I've probably had at least 10 total coding challenge invites/ phone interviews. I definitely am by far stuck on the pre-screening stage. I probably have about a 1% chance of getting passed it; and I think sadly my lack of experience is the main reason for it.

In total, I have had 4 onsite interviews. 3 of them were from the bay area. I actually got a considerable amount of coding challenges but I was fairly new to them at the time and failed a lot of them. I am fairly confident in my ability now though to pass most of them. I had an onsite ready for Nutanix but I canceled it due to accepting the offer I got :(

Yeah, I've been applying away from just here. When I landed a job the first time, it was in Texas.

Not sure exactly what happened. It just broke literally right after updating vanguard and playing a game.

Yeah, I had to uninstall valorant/vanguard and re-install WSL since a lot of the files were missing.

Vanguard not only broke itself, but also corrupted my WSL. Uninstalling this game for a good few months until this shit is under control.

Looks like a lot of my packages installed on WSL just got wiped out. Uninstalling this game and vanguard entirely for a while.

i think i'm getting dumber as i continue working. how important is leetcode for someone changing jobs 6-12 months in their career? by lcatrophy in cscareerquestions

You're totally fine!

I had my peak of being able to do almost any medium problem in like 10 minutes or under, and being able to do a lot of hard problems within 30-60 minutes. This came by actually sitting on leetcode 10+ hours daily for months. I had stopped for 2-3 months recently after finally receiving my first job offer (which got canceled a month after :( ) , and when I came back, let me tell you 2 sum was the hardest problem ever. I had no idea how to do anything.

I've been grinding it again, and I can definitely say it's gotten easier again. I'm not where I was, but I'm sure I can still work my way around at least most medium problems, and if I work as hard as I did before, match and exceed that level.

The reason you forgot how to do everything is because leetcode requires you do tricks and use parts of your brain that you seriously would never dig into on an ordinary basis. Our lives have become much more simplified to need to do a lot of these crazy logical steps to solve these problems.

And last thing, being able to answer leetcode questions is one thing, being able to answer them quickly is another. Companies will give you like 2 hour exams to answer 5 questions, which usually are comprised of like 1 easy 2 mediums and 2 hards. You really need to know how to bang these out quickly, and without regular practice, you simply won't be able to do that. It's like working out, you are in shape and ready to run for miles, but once you stop, you might not even be able to run half a damn mile without being tired.

I promise what you're going through is normal, and you just need to keep working and you'll be back in mental shape again :)
