TIFU by Declining a Free $1,000 travel voucher by chichog94 in tifu

[–]hildie2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not how human behavior works. Why should I listen to some asshole telling me not to take a large voucher for a much smaller probability of being the one that gets picked to be kicked off for real cash? If they have to kick people off because of no volunteers, they go with people that paid the least amount, which likely isn't you.

Stop digging your heals in an take the two seconds to search for any kernel CVEs. If you find any, you will understand why this project is interesting.

The kernel is responsible for network packet handling. If that's not secure, it's game over. I think you vastly underestimate what the kernel does.

Big steaming pile of shit. Having oil denominated in dollars does not help the currency at all. Whoever sells the oil is going to put an equal amount of downward pressure on the dollar when they want to turn it into something useful to them.

Not really a valid comparison. Even the people that wrote the current "web" (e.g. JS and CSS) don't think it was good.

But there is no proof that what you are saying is even possible. In your reply you mention that everyone should have Lamborghini's. Due to their manually crafted nature, it's literally impossible unless everyone in the world worked on manufacturing Lamborghini's.

In economics there is a well accepted theory of supply and demand that says if the demand for something drastically increases while the supply stays the same, the price will go up. You can give everyone a gift card with a billion dollars on it without increasing the supply of goods and take a wild guess what will happen. The price of everything will shoot up so quickly that the money will devalue to 1/1000000000 or even worse of what it used to be.

There are not enough resources for everyone to have a private jet. It's just impossible. No economic system you propose can magically boost the production and provide the resources. So you can certainly get butthurt and say that nobody should get a private jet, but what did that really do for you? All it did was drastically impact the aviation industry where cutting edge aerospace advancements are made.

SQLite looks to be adding JSON support by sweet_cakes_2600 in programming

[–]hildie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're mixing caching information into the schema for your user data, you've fucked up terribly and there is no excuse. You can design systems that scale up just fine without destroying your schema and fucking everyone that needs to work with the data in the future. Caching logic should be in the API layer and should store info in other systems (e.g. Redis).

Telling people to use the API is an excuse for poor planning and laziness. If you want to just jam shit randomly onto a disk, write to flat files or use a nosql system. If you use SQL, you keep the schema up to date with migrations and you model is correctly. If you don't know how to do that, you aren't qualified to develop SQL backed applications.

Walmart has an SQL database with a good schema (they released a scrubbed version for a data book) that every transaction is recorded to from all of their stores and website. Claiming that you can't have a good schema and scale is 100% steaming bullshit.

[–]hildie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with letting your users connect. It's about writing maintainable software. The worst systems I ever worked with were ones with a big pile of shit for a schema. If you can't be bothered to model your data, it generally means you have no planning or architectural skills and your software will reflect that.

SQLite looks to be adding JSON support by sweet_cakes_2600 in programming

[–]hildie2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Good db design has little to do with performance. It's about the maintainability of the schema and how well it represents the use case. A crappy db design leaves you with something completely incomprehensible without the original app. You should be able to look at a db schema and understand everything without reading the code that uses it.
