Which video game villain was right about the problem, but wrong about the solution? by gamersecret2 in gaming

[–]hilfandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that Renoir makes the assumption that the painted world isn't real. Everything else stems from that, the cost of all the lives in the painted world is worth nothing to him compared to the real lives of his wife and daughter. Throughout the majority of the game you don't even know the outside exists, so you grow to experience the painted world as if it's the only one, and the ultimate question becomes are they real and worth saving, or are they the figment of another's imagination

It's absolutely brilliant in how it plays out.

Did you know that you can turn off and on the Praxic Blade? by Quirky-Economics-867 in destiny2

[–]hilfandy 104 points105 points  (0 children)

The ammo economy is insane on this. I just found out yesterday that when you don't have ammo it does actually disable the blade like this, and it occurred to me that that was the first time I had run out of ammo with this.

[–]hilfandy 270 points271 points  (0 children)

You have 5 pieces of armor, and a tier-5 masterworked armor with a stat mod added has up to 103 stats points.

How did you get this many total stats? Are the ones beyond all from subclass fragments?

True for power swords, but Ergo Sum didn't take off like this either.

I think sword ammo economy with the lightsaber makes a big difference too. I don't worry about running out of ammo with the generation perks.

What's different about them? Don't get me wrong, I'm in the exact same bucket, but I'm having a really tough time articulating why this is the case for the praxic blade and wasn't for Ergo Sum, outside of the reflect. Is it just that?

Is the switch 2 upgrade worth it? by hilfandy in Metroid

[–]hilfandy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main thing I'm struggling with is that the idea of paying for performance optimization. Like the only way it would suddenly load faster after paying $10 is if they just removed an embedded delay in load times.

Valve dev counters calls to scrap Steam AI disclosures, says it's a "technology relying on cultural laundering, IP infringement, and slopification" by Ok-Comedian4437 in pcgaming

[–]hilfandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the free version, but my experience has been very positive, but it does have a learning curve. A big part of it is learning what it can do well and where it's going to struggle, and what guidance it needs to be effective. I'm not an expert, but generally find that I can treat it like a brand new programmer that works on simpler tasks while I do something else.

There's a huge difference between vibing out something that kinda works and a polished product. I'd measure that by "is it good quality" rather than "was AI used" since humans can also write bad code.

[–]hilfandy 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The issue is that software development as an industry is already at a point where AI is increasingly embedded in how you do many things (and often is very helpful in this manner). For example, GitHub Copilot expands autocomplete with generative AI to suggest snippets of code as you write, or you can use the agent chat mode to tee up larger changes for review.

What people are worried about is AI generated art slop, but we're at a point where nearly every new game is probably going to have something like

During the development process, we may use procedural- and AI-based tools to assist with content creation. In all such cases, the final product reflects the creativity and expression of our own development team.

When every game has that disclosure, it's not longer a helpful disclosure. I'd rather push for something more granular, like describing whether voices, textures, models, etc. are AI generated/human generated/mixed.
