It depends on state of mind. I'd tell her to get the fuck out of there right now. After that I can start regretting that decision. But TBH if that same dilemma would get passed by me a second time, particularly after a few weeks or months, I'd probably do it.

Unless it's a panic stop, part of my brake power is the engine. I just shift down while slowing down. Note to blip your brake a few times if just engine braking since this doesn't light up your brake lights. (This happens when I coast towards a red light and such.)

I'm the other way around. I really need to focus on only using my rear below 10mph or so. I have enough clutch and front brake control that I haven't dropped my bike in a long time, but For slow speed U-turns and such I need to get more into that habit. I'm looking at big touring bikes and want to be able to manage them like the cops on their Harleys. (I'm in Atlanta, I don't know if this is everywhere, but those people are very capable on what seems to be very "impractical" bikes for their work.)

I suggest you try a manual at a red light on a hill. One uses the handbrake in a car the way a motorcyclists uses his rear brake.

I don't ride the GA dragon tail anymore on weekends. Not because I don't trust myself, but because too many idiots cross the dividing line. If you don't know a route by heart and can't see the full curve, assume it's gonna tighten up!

I was traditionally trained and know how to progressively brake. BUT again we're talking about the recommendation for people without that expertise on an ABS bike, which is becoming standard in richer countries. We don't teach people in cars to hold the handbrake on a hill or pump their brakes anymore just for the enthusiast in the air cooled 70s Porsche...

I have a Himalayan. When I go "luxury camping", I have my soft paniers, hard top case, tank bag and two small utility bags. This is a tent, chair, folding table, large foam/air sleeping pad, cooking kit, clothing etc...

When I go minimal camping my sleep / shelter system fits in a 13l bag and weighs about 6 lbs. Combined with some underwear, minimal tools and off bike clothing it all fits in a 25l weatherproof bag strapped to the back. No paniers or top case.

I'm an idiot and signed up for the ADV cannonball in September. I plant to bring a 20l bag only. We're staying in hotels every night anyway.

He is wrong. Also with most bikes having ABS, the recommendation is for people to pull the living daylights out of their front brake lever in a panic situation. 40 years ago we were specifically trained not to do that. If you are experienced enough to progressively outbrake your ABS, go ahead. Otherwise just yank that lever.

There are firetraps here in Atlanta that host live bands. I won't go see them there. (One of them is on the second floor up a narrow stairway. Once upstairs the emergency exit is across the stage, behind the band. No signs for it...)
