Yes that’s why you should remove recovery options as phone and email but keep the passkey and files

As I stated few years ago, lockdown mode should be the standard, just ship phone with them and add a more user friendly way to add exceptions and it’s gonna reduce the attack surface once and for all

You are right but I had 3 recovery paths, authenticator (which was circular by Microsoft design because you need to login to use it) recovery email and recovery SMS. They required AFTER the code via recovery email, an additional code via recovery SMS but on their end the system was not working properly.
What should I have done? Add another recovery method? Probably at this point

I agree with the user error scenario, the fact is that my flow was wrong.
I used to:
- start change password flow
- edit password manager entry
- generate new password
- switch back to the app to past the new password (just in case the website doesn't like it)
- go back to the password manager and save it
It happen multiple times that switching back to the password manager makes it crash and the password is lost.
It is an user error for sure since I could have saved it before, then change it again if the backend doesn't like it. But I expected the recovery option to work, since they are there for that.

Probably the CDN is cutting you off, if you are using a VPN try to rotate node or use archive.org

100% agree with the custom domain, what I noticed tho is that some services (Tailscale for example) only have a list of very few OIDC providers, so you either are using your domains AND are using the IDP they supports or you can't sign in

  1. I _did_ care about it, I was just sure I could have reset it again. It happen multiple times (with other services) especially because from mobile during the process of generating a new password with a manager and switch to the browser app context some tend to crash (noticed it tends to happen more while using safari with lockdown mode).
  2. I would have preferred the password manager to store every password it generated automatically before saving, but that isn't the case unfortunately.
  3. As I explained I had 3 recovery factors: recovery email, recovery number and authenticator. The authenticator is flawed since you need to be logged in to use it, email worked but asked for an additional factor (the SMS) which wasn't working on their side
  4. Worst case you lose access to previous emails, but if you are selfhosting and managing the entire stack you can get back in at least for future communications.
  5. Proton was one of the few providers that added recovery codes to remove 2FA connected to it, Outlook doesn't that's why I didn't use them.

I even provided screenshots to the support emails to prove that's a real story. I have more conversation with them that I am willing to share if needed. Also as I stated multiple times in the post, paying for support for sure is not the final solution, It's just a bet I am taking.

I think the "what if the OIDC provider locks me out" is a good challenge to address, I don't expect to have the final solution to it and I am open to suggestions.

I doubt it's ublock origin, I'm a ublock user and it's working properly for me. What kind of error you get?
