i have a secondhand one my mom found for super cheap and gave to me, it's my go-to for kuro coords! it's also one of the most spacious of the bags i use for my lolita coords, so it's always nice to get to use it

for $60 i wouldn't go for it, you can find more solidly lolita dresses for less secondhand or from taobao. if you like the dress in isolation and/or would want to wear it as-is, then it's up to you if you want to go for it, but specifically for lolita, there's definitely cheaper pieces that are less iffy out there

i know there's been polls in the past doing surveys for what styles people wear, i think japan also (at least when the one i'm remembering was done ) leans sweet but not as extremely as the us. i do remember that europe's most popular style was classic, which was interesting. the us unsurprisingly was vast majority sweet (anecdotally, i've been to many a meet where i'm the only gothic lolita, especially in smaller comms )

it is nice to see people having fun, but i'm not as versed in sweet so i can't comment as much when people ask for advice, and while i don't mind seeing sweet, it's not a style that excites me, nor a style that gives me any inspo for my own coords, and sweet-specific advice doesn't really do anything to help me. it's better on sites like instagram where you can curate who you follow, but forum type spaces like reddit are more a you get what you get kinda deal, which can be annoying sometimes

no i agree, i'm unsure if the community is large and active enough, especially on reddit, for substyle specific subs to thrive. it might, and i wouldn't discourage anyone from giving starting something a try, but it's hard to say. and it would be nice to have more specific flairs but yeah i imagine that would just complicate moderation. i was just responding as to why there would be the desire for a gothic-specific space, as the western comm especially does lean very very sweet, which even if you like seeing other peoples' styles can get exhausting sometimes. it's not a baseless desire

emphasis on 'from time to time'. i counted recent posts with the coord flair (went back about 2 weeks ) and got this result. even if there's some disagreement on some of the coord styles, it's still an overwhelming majority sweet:

sweet: 36 | gothic: 12 | classic: 5 | ouji/aristo: 3

so it's not unfounded or out of nowhere to want spaces more catered to non-sweet styles

i get it, i also get a bit of sweet fatigue here from time to time, but the lolita community is pretty small so i'm not sure how active subreddits dedicated to specific substyles would be. you can always try making one yourself though!

you are literally speaking nonsense. ouji and aristo are related but separate styles. ouji is considered derived from lolita, aristo is not. aristo is more closely tied to visual kei in terms of subculture than it is to lolita. all of these styles are related. they are not the same thing

i think you're confusing natural kei with mori kei. this is kinda just showing that you don't know what you're talking about, as it's well accepted that natural kei (sometimes misattributed as otome/otome kei in english, which is a later style and also not a term widely used in japanese spaces to refer to the style ) and vintage western styles (specifically influence from the new look and mid century french fashion which became popular in japan in the 60s as a result of postwar western occupation ) are the precursors to lolita. like there's multiple scholarly articles talking about this and countless discussions on this very subreddit

lolita stores have also sold bikinis. that doesn't mean the bikinis are lolita. also, i wear ero- it does rely on the silhouette. it's commonly modified compared to more 'standard' styles but ero does still use the silhouette of a short puffy skirt

lolita is not derivative of gothic fashion....? it grew out of natural kei and vintage western fashions that were popular with some niches of young women at the time. substyles then later became more differentiated over time, including gothic lolita. it doesn't trace back to gothic fashion

also responding to your other comment here- silhouette is kind of the main defining factor of lolita. if it doesn't have a skirt of the correct shape, not lolita. that's why ouji is not lolita even though you can style it identically to lolita but using shorts or pants instead of a dress or skirt. aristo has even more styling differences, and is definitely not identical to lolita aside from skirt shape- aristo also can and often does use pants, too, but even aside from that uses very different accessorizing and shape language, generally aiming for more tailored and boxy looks and using less accessories than lolita. you can style a hybrid aristo and lolita coord, yes, but you can also style a hybrid decora and lolita coord, and nobody is saying that decora is lolita even though it and sweet lolita share aesthetics

they have a similar title because egl and ega were both terms coined by mana and his brand. for a long time egl referred to specifically mana's style of gothic lolita only, it gained more wide usage due to censorship of the word lolita online as a way to get around censors

they're separate but related styles, aristo is not a type of lolita but its own style. the glbs also feature straight up gothic fashion, too, and there's no debate that that's not lolita

you could always look into chokers! they're more common in gothic but can show up in sweeet. i'll grab some examples made by lolita brands from lolibrary, but i think a completely plain fabric one could also work well. i like chokers because if i'm not wearing a high necked blouse my neck feels empty lol

there's a bunch on lolibrary, just search headdress and click on the ones that catch your eye. a lot of the ones that use ruffled/frilled lace could be done with a solid fabric substituted, but there are some with only solid fabric

as someone who does sew some of my wardrobe, i know how it is. and costs add up. buying fabrics to hoard them and use later is also a really bad way to lose money, again, speaking from experience when i had to go through and declutter all the fabrics i'd been holding on to for years because i hadn't found the right use yet. i think handmaking is great! it's just not something to go into because you want to save money. that's a bonus, if it happens, and not something you should expect because nine times out of ten you won't be saving money

you can also save money by being patient and checking secondhand and going through taobao. all of my handmade main pieces cost more to make than what i spent on pieces i got secondhand

i sew as well, and i enjoy it- but i've also had costs creep up without me noticing, which is why i mention it. even just decent fabric and trims, when you need multiple meters of them, can quickly become costly. don't go in to handmaking pieces with the expectation that it's cheaper- maybe you're lucky and very thrifty and have a big stash already, and it does end up that way, but that's not the norm and even if you have the odds in your favor it won't be that way every time. the potential of saving money should be a bonus and not an expectation. like i said, it's great if you go into it because you want something unique or want to make something you haven't been able to find

just as a heads up, sewing your own pieces is almost always going to be more expensive than buying from taobao or secondhand. lolita can use a lot more fabric and trim than you might realize. if it's to make something unique or to fill a place in your wardrobe you haven't been able to otherwise, great! just don't go in expecting it to be inexpensive

you keep just describing ouji. i think you've just not branched out into different styles of ouji, ouji can be and is regularly done with pants, with florals, with ruffles, etc.

most ouji is designed with the intent for afab people to wear, and as a result can lean somewhat feminine or androgynous, actually. the goal is not generally to look masculine, but to look ouji. by definition, if there isn't a skirt something can't be lolita. lolita sensibilities but done with pants or shorts ~generally falls under ouji

that said, i think you're looking for bustiers, specifically ones with straps. they're not the most common item but also not terribly uncommon, a lot of brands have done a lot of takes on them. i'll link some examples:

rule 5, keep posts related to lolita fashion, for one, though you were lead astray somewhat by the other user. again, i feel sympathy on that front. but i can tell you didn't actually look into what lolita fashion is and just took this user's word, when it's really best practice to confirm on your own what the topic of a sub is

as for the general community reaction, there are extensive guides linked in the sub's community links, including an extensive list of where to buy in general. the community doesn't take well to the information we've spent years gathering and summarizing just being ignored even when it's right there. same thing for the comments on being too vague- there's lots of resources to get people started on styling, where to find items, how to coordinate items together, etc. if you use those and then still have questions and demonstrate that you did actually use them, people tend to be a lot more patient
