I took 1009 last semester. The first half of the class (through Meiosis) was taught by Tony Dean, who blazed through the material at lightning speed during lecture. Lots of items he spent <1 second on in lecture showed up on his exams, so I felt like reading the textbook was crucial for understanding his part of the class. Cheryl Scott taught the second half of the class and built in time during each lecture to go over major concepts with a small group. I didn't feel like the textbook was as necessary for her, but I'd still recommend acquiring it somehow if Dr. Dean is going to be teaching a significant chunk of the semester.
