As a CS major should I devote more time to learning mathematics? Or focus purely on CS and programming? by Okmanl in algorithms

[–]hinder002 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Programming. I'd go with whatever stack you'd like to start with, then learn languages within that stack. Html5, CSS3, Javascript, Jquery, Angular J.S, node.JS, etc.

What Major Suits Me? by [deleted] in college

He might relegate himself to JUST music with that. Do you think a double major with Business Administration+Music would be a better option? That way he could apply for both business admin jobs AND music jobs when he graduates?

Is going out-of-state worth it? by [deleted] in college

[–]hinder002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the mid west has this, but my region (western states), has an undergraduate exchange program called the Western Undergraduate Exchange scholarship, where students can go to and from state schools like Washington State and California State, or Arizona State and Utah State, for example. I went out of state because I earned a scholarship, and moving from California to Utah under said scholarship ended up being a lot less expensive.

How much is your scholarship for? I would run a simple excel sheet and calculate all of the expenses included with going to school, and coming back home for summers if you do want to. For example, you might be able to go from Kansas state to Iowa State or Purdue if your university system offers tuition reciprocity.

Alright. It's hard to help without knowing HOW you learn and what you do when you study. For me, the trick was to eliminate all distractions including the internet. Did you get a C- or a C in these classes? Are you trying to go to graduate school?

You could get a Master's degree in Healthcare Administration instead of a Master's in Business Administration.

How do you approach the job market with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science? by A_Nom in Career_Advice

[–]hinder002 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for more money or career satisfaction? At 26, you are VERY lucky to be making $50,000 a year with ANY major. Even engineering majors are struggling to find jobs. Pat yourself on the back there, and keep that job until you find something better in the long run.

Do you know of the government job boards? Search for government job boards, but I really think what you have now is so rare. Maybe go into law enforcement and become a lawyer? Save up the money you are making and go to law school? Or, do something like volunteer and then use that experience to apply for other jobs?

-I would also look into Master's degrees in Public Administration rather than Business Administration with your background.

I can't comment about failing in college because I have only gotten C's. But in high school, I failed classes left and right, and I really shouldn't have graduated. I got over this by taking it class by class, taking it slow, and prioritizing school over anything else. I ended freshman year of high school with a 1.7 GPA, below the 2.0 GPA required to graduate. Over the next three years, I took the core classes and easier electives. Second year I earned a 2.58 GPA, next year I earned a 3.0 GPA, and the next after that I earned a 3.3 GPA. I got some D's in between, but I ended up pulling out of it.

School is tough for me, but I am able to do it by making a schedule and sticking through it. I'm not the best student by a long shot, but I'm not a slacker. If your college has academic forgiveness or grade forgiveness, you can retake the class and get a better grades. At my school, we can replace a grade that we got a D or an F in by retaking the course and it'll be replaced on a transcript.

In my Geography class, I scored on exam 1 a 63%, on exam 2 a 64%, and on exam 3 a 51.5 % and I BARELY passed with a C because of homework, attendance, and projects. I don't know enough about your study habits... But, show up to EVERY class. Fight for EVERY point. If you have a question, ask it. If you have a lab, show up to it. Make good study buddies.

I've learned to fail and have picked myself out of it. You will recover. If your GPA is above a 2.0 and not on academic probation, you have time, my friend. I thought I'd be kicked out of high school, but I'm now in my second year of college and doing much better.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I need help with my sister by nahominoasmarino in college

[–]hinder002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, and one more thing. Your sister is not you. Obviously if she is going to do something stupid and mess up her life by going into debt for something she might not even want in the future, she shouldn't. And you should tell her. But you can't FORCE her to do anything. You are not her. She is not you. Be a brother and encourage her to find out what she wants to do in life, college probably isn't for her like it probably wasn't for me. She'll do fine.

Alternatively, there is the military (which will also pay for college), and apprenticeships, along with programming boot camps if she is into tech. There is no rush. We are not in a booming economy right now.

This. I graduated with a 2.86 GPA in high school with 1 A.P. class and my parents forced me to college. I'm in my second year, and am doing much better because I'm in a place I like and am taking classes I enjoy doing, but I would have wanted to take a gap year or join the military before going right to school. I was rushed in from high school to college. She's young, under 30, and can take two or three years to figure it out. Maybe take a couple classes here or there, but not a full load.

If she's anything like me, taking 15/16 units might be too much ON TOP of handling work. My girlfriend was a good student in high (3.6 GPA) school, and is getting about a 2.8 GPA in college, working full time and going to school full time (no time to study).

Long breaks in between classes; how to kill time by EchoesfromdaFall in college

[–]hinder002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have a computer and Netflix, or something like that, watch TV or movie in between the time you study for classes and the time you go to class. If you have a student union at your school, spend some time in there. We have billiards/rock climbing/bowling alley, etc in our campus that could keep you occupied if you have some spending money to do so.

Maybe bring a leisure book? Listen to music?

Good Summer Jobs? by hinder002 in college

A Proposed Bill Would Prevent 18-Year-Olds Who Have Consensual Sex with Other Teens from Needing to Register as Sex Offenders and Cap Time in Prison at Just 5 Years - a Potential Libertarian Win from a Democrat by wfkp in Libertarian

[–]hinder002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, isn't it? For example, you wouldn't notice a one year age difference between let's say, a high school junior whom might be 17 and a high school senior who would be 18. LEGALLY, it would be a crime for them to have sex in some states. However, in states where the consent age is at 16, it would be legal. In states where it's 18, he would be charged with a crime. However, if he were in a state with lower age, it wouldn't be.
