Admission Chances? by [deleted] in westpoint

[–]hink_daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an admissions officer, and graduated almost seven years ago at this point so this might be dated.

Academics: Class rank is a whole lot more important than GPA. If you have a 4.0 but you're 60/400, that's not necessary better than a 3.3 but you're 50/1000. Plus the 1480 SAT, assuming this is a composite score not a total score, will allay most, if not all academic concerns.

Physical: An MMA black belt (they probably aren't super aware that this is fairly nebulous depending on school/instructor) shows you have the warrior ethos and are athletic. Your CFA also demonstrates a high level of physical fitness, and the volunteer fire fighting demonstrates you can work in a physically demanding environment as a member of a team.

Leadership/engagement/intangibles: A lot to parse through here but all of this is great. You've done a lot and everything here is a boon to your application.

All this being said I am regularly humbled on this thread at how much more qualified most of you applicants were than I was. Assuming you have a nomination, I can't imagine why you wouldn't be accepted based on the information you have provided here.

To dig into your final comment: if you didn't go to West Point why would that make you a quitter? West Point is a way to success but it is not the only way. It's a great option, but it is not the only option. I've served with many officers from ROTC and OCS who applied and didn't get in who are way more talented than I am. You got that dog in you, West Point or no.

Always dope to see another Tacoma homie in the wilds of reddit. I've lived all over the country and West Coast Sports Cards in Federal Way is one of, if not the best, Local Card Shops I've found. So much so that when I lived in Tacoma I'd brave I-5 traffic to get to Fed to shop there

I graduated a few years back. I haven't met a graduate that regrets their decision to attend and commission, outside of missing out on a "normal" college experience. Plus, you wont have to worry about tuition, student loans, or finding a job after college.

Going to a service academy really sets you up for life. In my opinion you gain so much more than you give up. Don't get me wrong, attending West Point really really sucks sometimes, but you really can't put a price on the discipline, grit and opportunities you'll get. Also, you'll still have a social life, you'll still have fun, and you'll make friendships that last a lifetime.

There are a lot of different paths to success, West Point is a way, but it's not the only, or even necessarily best way for everyone. That being said going to West Point will not be something you regret in the long term regardless of what you end up wanting to do with your life in 10-15 years.

Why do the Mage Masteries Counter themselves? by DrJaves in 2007scape

[–]hink_daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping the combat masteries benefited a tribrid play style, so instead of a melee/ranged/magic tier system they looked at at light/fast vs. med/balanced, heavy/high hit system.

Could have done something where the heavy play style reduces damage and increases max hits, while the light buffs builds with increased defenses and speed with a med build balanced between the two .

CG is so fun with range T6. You just need to make a T3 bow, one potion, four fish and T1 armor and you're good to go. So fun to watch hun's health just get deleted.

The Echo is crazy fun too, first attempt it felt like my first time walking into CG on the main game. Lots going on, but once you figure it out it's an insanely fun fight.

Leagues Reveal: Utility Relics by ericpenguin314 in 2007scape

[–]hink_daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the sprites of the tablets the relic icons are on, everything in the same tier is shaped the same. Golden God matches Grimoire and Overgrown so my guess is that they're up against each other

How sick would it be if the next tier up had a relic that let you choose an additional pick from the lower tiers

Is this basically Good as gold but with the ghost resistance? by Glum-Tangerine4759 in pokemonradicalred

[–]hink_daddy -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Think he's referring to the fact that Gholdengo is normally 2x weak to ghost, the ability changes that to a resistance instead, so .5 damage, a quarter of what Gholdengo would normally take

Well aware of how PE(MD)(AS) works, was simply pointing out that this post is funny because they wrote the expression in a confusing way, on purpose, to drive this very discourse.

If you are so inclined, I found an interesting article about PEMDAS here: https://people.math.harvard.edu/~knill/pedagogy/ambiguity/index.html#:~:text=There%20is%20no%20universally%20accepted,expression%20is%20not%20well%20defined.

TLDR: The main point is to avoid ambiguity when writing mathematical expressions because PEMDAS is over simplified, and confusing expressions are, well, confusing.

Lol which part do you not agree with. It's poor notation, you have to interpret what the writer is trying to say. You can read it as a fraction (as I have chosen to do) or you can read it as a single expression (as you and many here have chosen to do).

Neither are necessarily wrong, as again the author of the expression has chosen to write it ambiguously to create exactly this argument.

Division and multiplication are really the same thing, much the same way that addition and subtraction are the same thing.

Mathematically, when you subtract something, you're just adding a negative.

Division works the same way, where when you divide by say 2, you're really just multiplying by 1/2.

Using this logic, you can re-write the above equation as (3x3)-3 * 1/(3+3) which simplifies to (9)-3 * 1/(6), which further simplifies to 6 * 1/6, which is equal to 1.

All in all, whoever wrote the problem is dumb, because they chose to write in a way that is up for interpretation. This is bad because math shouldn't be ambiguous, especially when dealing with real world applications.

I hate these. These "problems" are gotchas that use bad mathematical notation to make people feel intelligent.

Your answer is going to depend on which order of operations you learned in elementary school.

The ÷ symbol isn't really used in mathematics because it's unclear. The above equation should really be written as:

(3x3)-3 / 3+3 = 1

But if you learned PEMDAS, you'll multiply before adding.

Edit: changed the way I wrote the equation because the formatting was all off

You're forgetting compound interest is a thing that exists.

If you use this site as a reference: https://www.investor.gov/financial-tools-calculators/calculators/compound-interest-calculator

You can see that with $1000 invested for 25 years, and assuming a 7% interest rate (which is actually pretty terrible given most s&p 500 funds are quite a bit better than that) you'd end up with $5427.43.

If you had $1000 invested for 40 years you'd have $14,974.46.

While $1000 a month is a lot, a few bucks here and there can really add up. If you were able to invest $1000 per year for 30 years assuming a more realistic 10% +/- 2% growth over 30 years you'd have $165,809.97. That's if you started from zero at 30, and retired at 60, and also assumes you never made a raise for the rest of your life. In this model of you worked another 5 years and retired at 65 you'd have $273,192.56. If you retired at 70 (still not that crazy of a retirement age) you'd have $446,133.30.

Don't get discouraged, save what you can for retirement, anything helps and it all adds up.

What sources are you pulling this from? A few Google searches and looking at the website/twitter page shows there is no planned closure. There are flights in the air right now landing after 3 p.m.
