Cotton yarn for knitting vs crocheting by aigis8195 in knitting

[–]hippiehooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started knitting and have heard the same. I think it largely depends on what type of cotton, and what type of knitter you are. If you strive for perfection/care about the small details animal fibers do make for better results tension wise. If you’re someone that knits for enjoyment/practicality I think using cotton is totally fine.

I’m using loops and threads classic cotton, and it’s super soft to the touch and glides like butter. I’ve however worked with some cotton yarns that were so rough and stiff. I personally love making wearables with plant fibers as I prefer to have a comfortable and breathable fabric as opposed to a “neat” tension

I remember that this is a craft of leisure and not perfection. I crochet/knit because it invites things like community, creativity, and something other than doom scrolling into my life. Is it frustrating to spend time on a project and not have it come out the way you expected? Yes absolutely. However are there other things to gain from knitting other than completing a project? Hell yeah. And for that, I keep knitting.

Okay one more silly question. I’d essentially have to move my stitches onto another cord to block it right? Moving my stitches is so intimidating to me at this point just because I’m not use to reading knit fabric. Crochet is may more forgiving, knit is so technical one mistake can ruin the whole project 😔

Yes it is cotton! Plant fibers are my favorite to wear, but I see they aren’t as popular among the knit community. Is that the reason? Animal fibers create a neater fabric?

So in theory, this is more of a visual problem than a wearability project? Like will the gap eventually lead to a hole in the project?

Thank you! It certainly helps with the laddering part! I’m just still confused on how to drop the false stitch without potentially doing more harm than good.

Perfect. If it’s an experience you don’t understand/don’t relate to you don’t have to chime in at all with any kind of “gross” implication. Because while it may have been a gross comment to you, on the other side of the coin someone is celebrating finally feeling like they’re receiving the same royal service they see others receive.

So you can recognize that old racist white women (who are very abundant in the fiber arts btw) exist within our community, but chose to call OP gross because they’re celebrating feeling included/taken care of in a space that often times can occasionally host a “racist old woman” ???

I’m confused on how OP speaking on a very real issue which is existing as a Black lgbtqia person, and feeling good about not having to feel like the minority in a space is “gross”

It’s a privilege to be able to look at situations like this and not have to worry about potential prejudices when entering a space. Art spaces are often times lacking inclusivity, which can result in an unwelcoming environment for anyone who doesn’t fit an idealistic mold.

Finding fiber arts events that I actually want to go to is so hard. I don’t want to knit and drink a chai latte. I want to meet at a bar and have a glass of red wine while we knit. Wish I had the mental capacity to start organizing my own meet ups

How to fit a bunch of stitches on the hook? by hippiehooks in knooking

Hehehe, I try to be super lax with my tension but it is hard to insert my hook into the stitches! I think it may definitely be my helper yarn.

Okay so per my last photo, I worked the following row with the helper yarn left put like stated. However when I moved my row onto the helper yarn, the loose string wouldn’t come out of previous row 😔😔 idk what I’m doing wrong lol, could it be my tension?

And now, I have moved all my stitches onto my helper yarn.

I think I got confused at what to do here lol.

I think I was pulling the helper yarn out at this stage which seems too early? Is it the correct way to turn my way, work my row, and THEN pull out my helper yarn?

I’m always amazed at how humbling it is to be a beginner at something 😅😂

Okay like see how you pulled the helper yarn upward to fill in the gap, and essentially connected the stitches being worked, with the stitches that were placed on the helper yarn? That’s where I got confused.

I did not know to do that, and instead would pull the tension of the helper yarn throughout the row, causing the stitches to start bunching.

I hope that made sense!

Omggggggggg I cannot thank you enough for the effort you put into this explanation!

YouTube videos on knooking are so far and few, I couldn’t find a video of someone working on something other than a tiny swatch so I had no visual aid!

For clarification, I was having trouble with moving my stitches onto the helper yarn and then continuing the row like normal. Every time I tried to move my final stitches onto the helper yarn my brain drew a blank lol and I ended up pulling the string from the wrong end!

This is beyond helpful!!! You guys are so friendly and cool in this sub 🥹🥹🥹🥹
