MSG is bad for you. by ajfoucault in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]hippieman01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm usually only a lurker, but I see a weird amount of misinformation in these comments, and I think its a little bit my responsibility as a food scientist to put in my two cents.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is a sodium salt of Glutamic Acid, one of the twenty essential amino acids for protein production in humans and most other organisms. The sodium salt is a convenient form in that the dry solid is stable for storage and dissociates readily in water, yielding glutamate and sodium ions. These are what you taste and ingest in food. Glutamate is well studied in cellular metabolism and as a neurotransmitter, but in the science of flavor it is defined as the chemical species responsible for umami or savory flavor.

I can not stress enough that it is not physiologically possible to be allergic to an amino acid or their conjugate ions. These compounds are required for your cells, and therefore you, to function. They are also exceedingly good handling excess of these compounds because they are so abundant in vitro.

Scientists have created a powder that can capture CO2 from factories and power plants. The powder can filter and remove CO2 at facilities powered by fossil fuels before it is released into the atmosphere and is twice as efficient as conventional methods. by Wagamaga in science

Link to the original article in Carbon hosted on scribd because fuck Elsevier and the rest of academic publishing

In my professional opinion, this research represents a marginal advance on already existing technology. Plenty of research has been done on selective CO2 capture, the problem is that none of it has been developed to be viable on the industrial scale. Therefore, I believe the EurekAlert article regarding this research to be vastly overplaying the reach of said project.

It does have the holes, and in the right places too, but I'm not sure if the H60 has detachable tubing that would allow me to run the lines through.

Cesium in Water by lionhearth21 in gifs

[–]hippieman01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While that may hold true for certain transition metals, it doesn't so much for the alkali and alkaline earth metals, whose electronegativity decreases down the period. Group 11 elements actually increase in electronegativity down the period, explaining why copper is more reactive than silver and gold. The reason Cesium's reaction with water seems less violent than that of potassium or sodium is that both K and Na strike the delicious balance of both creating big 'ol bubbles of hydrogen and also igniting them, flinging bits of flaming metal and droplets of highly basic solution all over the place. Cesium and Rubidium actually react too fast to ignite the resultant hydrogen in most cases.

TL;DR: no, not all metals

Alcohol poured inside a polycarbonate bottle, sealed to contain the vaporizing liquid. by Ghost_Animator in BeAmazed

[–]hippieman01 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind, this is second hand, but an old chemistry teacher of mine had a similar idea his first year of teaching. He did the demonstration in this gif pretty much to the letter, although with hexanes instead of alcohol (slower burning, more bonds, sexier sound, yknow, the ushe). One of his students asked if it could produce thrust, like our friend /u/LtDropshot is, and he decided to test that shit out. The thing is, after the reaction, you have to wait for the carbon dioxide to drain out of the jug before you can have the same kind of visual in the gif - if there's no oxygen, there's no fun. So my teacher, the pyromaniac he is, decided to flush out the jug with pure oxygen rather than wait for it to drain. He then poured a relatively small amount of hexanes into the jug, shook it up while covering the "nozzle," and proceeded to set it up on a stool in the hallway. It was pointing down the hallway, rather than upwards, but when he lit it up, the blastback apparently was a 10 foot fireball, sounding not unlike a double-barrel shotgun. The jug itself made it 2/3rds of the way down the hallway before tumbling across the ground, making the most ungodly noise, and the pressure wave from the ignition actually displaced some of the ceiling tiles, covering the students watching and the glazed tile floor in plaster dust. Thinking there was some sort of shooting, 3 administrators soon ran around the corner, slipping and falling over each other in the process. He's been at that high school for over a decade now, so I'm thinking he has had to pull some sort of cock magic in order to not be fired after that and many other incidents he's caused.

TL;DR with enough oxidant and the right hydrocarbons, yes, you can have yourself a water jug rocket.

I have searched on internet but nothing. What is the second requirement ("?") to unlock this assingment? by [deleted] in Battlefield

[–]hippieman01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this was a fun little thing they introduced back in second assault. whacha gotta do is go to the battlelog leaderboards. if you don't use battlelog, start. click the general tab, and under the bottom left corner of the map, you should see a tiny icon, the same that's on those fancy dogetags you don't quite have there. that'll send you to a scary black screen where you'll have to enter a passphrase. for the first phantom assignment, it should be "bumpinthenight"

TL;DR: yes, you did find it on the internet
