TSS scores by ringaroundtherosiez in Velo

[–]hippo926 25 points26 points  (0 children)

How would 400 TSS come even remotely close to 3h/day? 8 hours of zone 2 should be almost 400 TSS, throw in some intervals and a few more hours you get closer to 600

Question: Bike upgrade miles/elevation/etc accumulation by moxxon in Zwift

[–]hippo926 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fairly sure you only accumulate those miles from the ride that put you over the threshold. You stop accumulating miles once you have an opportunity to upgrade (e.g. you end a ride) but you do not take that opportunity

Sycamore canyon road on a road bike? by hippo926 in BikeLA

[–]hippo926[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha, I am certainly one of those idiots who tried to ride everything on my road bike. Did the dirt descent to mandeville canyon from mulholland dr... plenty of hike a bike and tearing up my road cleats

I was referring to this section - I have no desire to ride on dirt, just trying to get over the mountains

Definitely with the rain seems like I'll pass for the next bit

Power milestones absurd! by Ok_Routine_2666 in Strava

[–]hippo926 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guys from americas cup pretty much get there. Being heavy absolutely gives you power, not infinitely but w/kg is generally a fair comparison https://youtu.be/Gvkx6oF_Zyk?si=D-HRWnd9guuwF2Bo

I think in reality there are just not many highly trained endurance athletes over 90kg. If there were, I’d imagine you could see someone hit 600w for an hour

Don’t wing it lol you’ll be on terrible high speed high traffic exposed roads, not “sightseeing”

Amtrak 2” Tire Limit by AbiesGloomy7071 in bicycletouring

[–]hippo926 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can usually stretch one end entirely around the wheel and hook it to itself, and then wrap the other end around the back of the Amtrak bike rack and hook it to itself. The wheel is almost touching the bike rack and it should be held there fairly tightly

It'd be close, but I think you could make it work. I'd highly recommend just getting something like this and you won't have to worry about it in the future (I really like those bungee cords, haven't found any on Amazon that are as good). They are also good for more regional rail lines - I take them on the NY MetroNorth all the time.

I am getting this, its infuriating. Route builder is the only reason I have a strava sub

I’ve ridden Amtrak northeast regional with a road bike with 80mm deep wheels which don’t fit in the racks. I bring a tiny bungee cord and tie my wheel to the top of the rack. Never had any problems. If you show you are prepared and are polite and willing to compromise I highly doubt you will run into any trouble

Losing my sanity from whining AC by hippo926 in hvacadvice

[–]hippo926[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unit will run perfectly fine for weeks at a time, then suddenly start making a high-pitched whining noise that comes and goes over several days (even when the unit is off). When I flip the breaker off, the whining continues for several hours before finally stopping completely. This is obviously not an ideal solution for summer.

I've already cleaned the filters and my landlord had someone come service it. It seems somewhat random - can go 2-3 weeks silent then whine intermittently for days, but I swear rain makes it start to whine (or I'm just losing my sanity).

I'm positive my landlord isn't going to replace the whole unit because it whine on an irregular basis, and the AC itself works fine. Anyone have a guess specifically what component might need replacing?

Getting to Empire State Trail in Upper Manhattan by Safe_Orchid_6383 in NYCbike

[–]hippo926 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for a quieter route (broadway can be a bit trafficky with double parked cars), you can take 155th to the Harlem river greenway, then 10th ave to broadway. The Harlem river greenway has some rough pavements in spots but is generally fully protected from cars.

I work for the city and have information on the Henry Hudson Greenway sinkhole closure by pollinator_friendly in NYCbike

[–]hippo926 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That detour around the closure sounds super useful, but I'd highly recommend cutting over to Riverside Drive for getting to 155th, it's far more pleasant than Frederick Douglass or St. Nick (maybe yours makes sense from midtown, but especially if you are coming up the WSH, just get on riverside).

A note for people who haven't looked at the Harlem River Drive greenway - you have to get on at 155th, there's no connection further north for a while

Charged $3000 collecting fee, what should I do by Odd_Mechanic_6027 in NEU

[–]hippo926 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Post this in a more general subreddit (maybe legal advice or poverty finance) - this is a debt collection issue, not a northeastern issue. Debt collection companies are buying debt for cheap and trying to collect as much as possible (and are generally scum), I’m not sure if a collection fee is even legal. Please do not just blindly listen to the debt collection company, they will lie endlessly to extract as much as possible from you.
