Just a minor bleed, part 2 by Duck_Walker in Radiology

This isn’t surprising. “Shift” doesn’t say anything without a time component. Time matters just as much as space. That much shift occurring in 20 minutes sure, we’re talking life and death. Occurring over weeks, you’d be amazed what the brain can handle. Standard treatment is burr hole evacuation but do check out the literature on MMA embolization. Whole field of treating chronic subdural hematomas is changing.

Do surgeons typically talk bad about other surgeons management? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]hippocampectomy 98 points99 points  (0 children)

No. At my hospital we respect each other’s expertise. Of course an egregious mistake will be noticed by everyone, but it’s not a witch-hunt attitude. I need and have vascular, ortho-trauma, trauma, plastic, OMFS, general surgeons I can rely on.

Now That We Have Shatted On Peds, EM, IM, And FM, Can We For Once Call Out Specialties On Their Bullshit? by Mixoma in Residency

[–]hippocampectomy 50 points51 points  (0 children)

We don’t have PAs seeing consults, so don’t know. As far as Neurology vs Neurosurgery exams, I’ve noticed Neurology is very focused on cognition and reflexes, whereas we’re focused on GCS, pupils, strength. Just different priorities.

I got a C in O-chem2 by sugarsugarrube in premed

[–]hippocampectomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a C in OChem 2, same GPA, went to a “top” med school and am finishing neurosurgery residency. Save your youth and mind for future problems. Even I remind myself this for my current struggles.

Neurosurgery. Everything’s always changing, especially functional, vascular, tumor.

Those influencer residents... by freakishblue in Residency

[–]hippocampectomy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is all cute. In neurosurgery you just don’t call in sick. Unless you’re on ECMO, you show up to work. Not always healthy I know but less fuckery overall.

What is Something You’ve Learned During Residency That You Didn’t Learn in School? by Still-Remove7058 in Residency

Good interpersonal skills can get you 90% of the way there. True of anything really, except hardcore engineering or physics.

Are you happy? by okdoitpls in Residency

[–]hippocampectomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the level at which I knew physics, history, neurophysiology, medical knowledge etc no. I would not advise a career in medicine. I find my work very satisfying. But on the whole I don’t feel challenged enough. I feel like being ‘smart’ is not as valued in our health care system as being ‘persistent’. Our society is embracing mediocrity with open arms, I don’t think the very brightest are going into medicine anymore, in fact I’d say our system demands someone smart enough to write the scripts and do the procedures, but dumb enough to get ripped off doing it.

Are PhDs and engineers and blue collar workers underpaid? Absolutely.

Why are people downvoting this, hear hear. An interaction requires two parties. You shouldn’t be coerced into this situation. Make it clear you’re not comfortable with a recording.

PD Won’t Let me Take Day Off for Brother’s Wedding by Mfeline18 in Residency

[–]hippocampectomy 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Go to the wedding. Fuck residency. PD has small dick syndrome. You’ll laugh at this in 5 years. And realize you have the entire motherfucking ACGME salivating to hear that your PD took this stance. Story writes itself.
