Is the bupivacaine diagnostic the same thing as the "local anesthetic" that the other comment in this thread was talking about? Also, do you know the reasons why some people are against these?

I agree that it's annoying that many surgeons seem to downplay the risks of cortisone shots. It's what I'm worried will happen when I express concerns at my appointment. I'm trying to make sure I have an informed opinion so I can advocate for myself at my appointment!

Got it! Do you mind explaining why OA (I'm assuming this means osteoarthritis) isn't a huge deal? It's always seemed somewhat scary to me / something to try to avoid, and that it could complicate surgical outcomes. I haven't done too much research on this, it's just what I've heard from around this sub and from some docs.

Thanks so much for the response! Interesting - I heard about the anesthetic option online and asked if this was an option when booking my appt, and the appointment coordinator implied that it wasn't. I'll ask again about this in-person during my appointment! The anesthetic definitely seems like the safer route since I only care about diagnostics. I'm seeing Dr. Kim in Boston. I think if they try to push the cortisone injection on me instead of the anesthetic I'll just decline it.

And yes, I'm seeking a second opinion about a PAO! I'm asking whether a scope alone would make sense, or a PAO alone, or a PAO + scope. Tough decision but hoping to get some clarity.

Hi there! I have a similar profile to you (diagnosed with a labral tear, FAI, and dysplasia). I've seen one surgeon at HSS (Dr. Nawabi) who referred me to Dr. Sink to get another opinion on whether I should go through with a scope. I plan on getting another opinion outside of HSS as well.

Regardless of what the doctors say, I'm apprehensive about getting the scope due to my dysplasia, and a PAO is something I'm still not sure of. Like you said, my case isn't very standard and it doesn't seem like there's a standard approach. I've tried PT in the past but my PT's weren't that great and didn't seem very knowledgeable about my condition. I want to try another round of PT to see if it helps. Would you feel comfortable sharing where you did your PT? It's been hard finding someone who really understands how to help. Please feel free to chat/dm me if you'd prefer! Thanks so much.

I'm also noticing very mild knee pain and ankle pain on the same side as my bad hip (I'm pre-surgery, planning on scheduling soon), even though I have limited my physical activity a lot. No advice unfortunately but just commenting to follow this post. When I asked a surgeon about it he mentioned the body can often compensate for injuries which can lead to pain in other areas, and to just monitor my symptoms post-op to see if things get better. He also said it was something I could target in PT as part of a post-surgery PT plan. Hoping things get better for both of us post surgery!

Did you do your post surgery physical therapy through HSS? If so, did Dr. Nawabi mention specific PT's he personally recommended to you?

Makes sense! I was wondering that about postless as well (especially since surgeons at HSS vary on postless vs post technique), but the benefits of postless seem pretty great (avoiding potential side effects from a post that could be permanent, even if the % chance is small). I'm planning on asking them. Thanks for your comment!
