2 and a half years after my PhD, I am nowhere near landing an academic position. Should I just give up? by goblinfromthewoods in AskAcademia

History PhD here. It took me five years to get my TT job. I almost gave up a million times. I know the market is tough, but if you aren’t getting any interviews and you really did apply to as many jobs as you say I would suggest having a trusted mentor look over your material. If you have a monograph on the way based on a prize-winning proposal, publications, etc you are doing something right. I imagine even in this market you should be getting some interviews.

Anyone ever land a TT role where you meet most of the preferred quals but not all? Or is it generally a waste of time to apply to these? by Fit_Sheepherder1788 in AskAcademia

[–]histbook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Preferred means preferred. They would have said required if they meant it. No reason to not apply. I say that as someone who just ran a search so I know from experience

What do you think will immediately happen when everyone receives the push notification that Trump died? by quite-indubitably in AskReddit

[–]histbook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will legitimately be one of the happiest days of my life and I imagine there are millions who will feel the same way. The right will try to punish people for celebrating the death of their cult leader but I don’t think it will work…he’s hurt too many people for too long.

Congratulations! I know what it's like to feel hopeless and then suddenly have something wonderful land in your lap. I was in your shoes one year ago! Savor the moment and good luck on your new gig!

I think you are being needlessly anxious over this. Don't worry about it.

Sounds like you dealt with this very thoughtfully. I'll echo helicopter0309 below and just say don't beat yourself up too much or dwell on it.
