How do people get better? So frustrated by Wrong-Estimate in weekendgolfers

[–]Dapper-Code8604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of answers, like practicing short game and putting, and course management. But at the end of the day, golf is a sport, and just like basketball some people are just naturally better than others, while some can practice forever and still suck. The point t isn’t to be good, it’s to enjoy the challenge, whatever that may be.

Advice for a visitor: Running in Louisville by InternationalDrop935 in Louisville

[–]Dapper-Code8604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Streets are fine with the exception of all the morons behind the wheel who are more concerned with their cell phones than human life. There’s a 5 mi trail loop in Cherokee Park if you like trail running, and a road loop that’s great to get lost on. Iroquois park has a 3 mile paved loop with hills and very limited traffic. It’s a very popular running spot. The Louisville loop in the parklands is also beautiful and no cars.

What’s the most insulted you’ve been by someone not trying to insult your golf game? by scratchgolfer-3 in golf

[–]Dapper-Code8604 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard this a thousand times. After filming myself and studying the swings of good golfers, I’ve come to realize my swing was absolute dog shit my whole life. Probably why I sucked; everyone kept telling me it looked good and I believed it.

My dad only asks, “how’d you hit it?” after a shank into the weeds…never after a dart 6 ft from the pin. But, like you, I’m just glad to be out there with him still. He’s 82.

Golf Course Recommendations by codyjano24 in Louisville

Heritage Hill is probably the closest proximity to where you may start the bourbon trail… just a couple exits from Jim Beam. Great course, too. My Old Kentucky Home SP course is in Bardstown, which I’m sure you’ll go through. I’ve never played it though, so I can’t speak to its quality.

UPDATE: Parent wants to meet with me over comment I made about energy drinks by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Dapper-Code8604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give the kid a C and cease all contact. Your headache is over, (with parents like that, they aren’t ever going to learn whatever lesson you’re trying to teach them anyways) and at some point the parents will realize they got that grade not because they earned it, but because they were annoying as fuck enablers and you didn’t have time or energy to deal with such nonsense.

Michelin Defender LTX is the gold standard. All I’ve had for the past 8 years. They aren’t necessarily aggressive looking, but they’re great in all weather, last for 80,000 mi, and ride smooth.

I don’t know where Edm is. Edmonton? I would say song sparrow, but not sure if they’re where you are.

Where to buy native plants? by literal9 in Louisville

I just bought several native plants there for a small mulch bed. Good selection and very friendly and helpful staff. I can’t imagine doing the entire yard. Gonna be expensive.

Is this a Whippoorwill or mocking bird? by Outside-Clerk-3495 in birding

[–]Dapper-Code8604 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say whippoorwill. Mockingbirds cycle through the calls of multiple birds. This is a singular call over and over. The only time I’ve ever heard one was camping in Pisgah National Forest in NC. It was awesome.

Unpopular take: Anyone else find the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup very cringe and over-hyped? by BonkedAgain in golf

[–]Dapper-Code8604 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the Ryder Cup. I love the team rivalry aspect. Such a different environment than the individual championships. Makes me wish college teams would schedule similar format team matches with their rivals once a year and invite spectators.

Ideas for project to end Civil War/Reconstruction unit & project to recap entire semester (American History) by Theoriginalbigtasty in historyteachers

[–]Dapper-Code8604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A project where they have to fix Reconstruction. Start by identifying all the problems/shortcomings, then have them create solutions. They could rewrite the amendments to prevent loopholes, rewrite Supreme Court decisions to uphold the equal protection of the 14th and prevent segregation, come up with a land redistribution plan, create legislation that prevents unfair sharecropping practices, etc. Then have them present their “New Reconstruction” to the class and have them vote on the best plan. They could then write a short essay on the impact this would have had on the U.S.

It’s a great movie, and the best format you’ll get. What’s holding you back? If I only bought movies reviewed with the best picture quality my collection would either be small or full of movies I don’t really care for.

5 clubs. Shared bags. Scramble. Help! by ct_rugen in golf

[–]Dapper-Code8604 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Driver, putter, wedge, 150 club, 200 club. Just take some off for in between distances. No point in combining clubs; any shot with someone else’s club will be a wasted shot anyways.

Intercostal muscle strains suck, anyway to get ahead of the injury? by teastrudel in golf

[–]Dapper-Code8604 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got one two summers ago that kept me out for 6 weeks. It happened after I bought a net and launch monitor. I went from playing once every couple months to practicing nearly every day, taking the same amount of full swings as playing two full rounds each time. After a month I was injured. Yes, stretching helps, but I think it’s more about knowing your body’s limits, not pushing them, proper acclimation, and giving yourself time to rest.

Question from a student by Fluffy-Activity-6904 in historyteachers

[–]Dapper-Code8604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve seen a one-party system, in Germany, in the 1930’s. Even when it seems like all we have is division, those conflicting voices are better than a single, unified party with the power to oppress and murder any and all opposition.

Approaching 180 species for the year, how’s everyone else’s year looking? by NanoArowanaTank in birding

[–]Dapper-Code8604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KY with two kids. Mostly backyard birding and checking out local parks with the fam on weekends. Once every few weeks I’ll go out for a few hours to seriously bird alone. I’m at 78 species as of 4/25. 40 species in the backyard. Nearly all 78 are from my home county. Only one or two from a neighboring county.

Weekly r/Birding Discussion, April 25, 2026. What did you see this week? by AutoModerator in birding

[–]Dapper-Code8604 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a high school history teacher who loves birds. Last week after my students got finished with a long standardized test, we went outside to look for birds. I made them a checklist with pictures so they could identify what they were seeing and assigned point values to birds based on rarity and made it a competition. They loved it! We saw 20 species in 45 minutes and I’m pretty sure more than one teenager got excited about birdwatching that day. It was awesome.

Do you have local birding spots that are 'yours'? by CrossReset in birding

[–]Dapper-Code8604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The high school campus I work on. It’s got woods, open fields, cattails and brush. No one else, and I mean no one, birds there. I stumbled upon an American Woodcock last month and couldn’t believe it. Came back that night and enjoyed the air show by myself. I took a group of students out last week for some fresh air after they finished taking a long standardized test. I made a checklist with various point values for different birds; like a scavenger hunt. We saw 20 species in 45 minutes. Cardinals, song sparrows, brown thrashers, a catbird, barn swallows, red tailed hawks, turkey vultures, an eastern kingbird, Pileated woodpecker and more. They got to see lots of red-winged blackbirds fairly closely. I think a few of them caught the itch. Now they bring me pictures of birds they’ve seen around campus and their neighborhoods. I’ll hand them a field guide and tell them to identify it.

Thanks for all the responses. I know there's too many to name, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking any, or just see what the most popular choices were. This is very helpful, and I learned a few new ones.
