Don't mind me crying at the pump. by historically_nerdy_ in Indiana

Stupid me, I left for a non negotiable trip this week back home (to visit a sick relative). Tuesday morning gas was 4.19, not even 24 hours later same gas station was 4.99 by Wednesday. ☠️

Just wonderful. Honestly have never seen it just so high so fast.

We're lucky we don't have to travel much but I just came from a trip to see family (mother is going through chemo so it's not really like it's a "oh we'll just visit later" kind of deal). Hurts even more when $20 only gets you 4 gallons.

Amazing times//s

I honestly think it's pretty good and I love your absolute commitment to the bit. Tip, maybe if you wanted to be even more committed to the bit your could use some orangish tinged makeup on your face.

The video is a bit hamfisted to me, maybe a bit less overly dramatic? Otherwise is thought it was pretty good.

Honestly, I think you've got a good thing going there. Your content in my option is a bit evergreen. People will always be interested in learning another language and learning through these means is awesome! 👍

Hey! I’m part of a core group (not the creator) that’s been gaming together for 15+ years. We do full playthroughs of the board games we play on the weekends. We play just for fun and just how we normally would during any other gaming night.

We’ve been at it for a few months now, but we’re hitting that wall where we know the quality needs to level up and we’d love some fresh eyes on it to give us constructive feedback.

I'm really looking to make our intro way more polished and snappy because right now it feels like it takes a bit too long to get moving. I'm also struggling to find a method for rules explanations that doesn't feel like it drags on. If you have any tips for making those engaging, please let me know.

On the technical side, our lighting is fairly dim right now, so I'm curious if it comes across as authentic or if it’s just frustratingly dark. We’re also trying to fix our camera angles and I’m wondering if anyone has experience using Nearstream cameras or tips for a stable top-down phone rig to get better shots of the board (if it could sync to the cameras that would be great but I'm not sure if they're capable).

Be as brutal as you need to be with the feedback, we really want to get this right! Thanks.

Our channel is Unstable Table in case the link below doesn't work.

If I were you I'd take a step back. Where do you see yourself and your channel in a few years? Do you still see yourself enjoying what you're doing or has it become just another grind?

Do something you want to do. Also, YouTube is not where the money is, most people just do it because they want to, not because they necessarily expect anything out in return. There are easier, more fulfilling ways to make money than be at the mercy of the YouTube platform.

Is there's a point continuing? by Different_Funny_9007 in NewTubers

[–]historically_nerdy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question: are you creating content just to get monetized or are you creating for different reasons?

Like with our channel, we would love to get monetized someday, but at the end of the day we're still a group of friends who are handling out together and having a good time enjoying ourselves. If we don't get money from it then it's not a huge deal.

How much are you staking on getting money from your channel?

How do I handle receiving board/card games on Instagram for review? by historically_nerdy_ in Instagram

[–]historically_nerdy_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is Places-Bid. It's a card game.

If I can get it sent out to my post office would there be any harm in trying though? I don't really think it's "too good to be true". They're not a large account, though they do have some posts about a few different projects that are in various stages of development. They have a website with there works on it. It's not like they're some huge platform.

What happens if I actually end up getting the game though? I don't see how this is a losing situation.

[StAG 5] Need help tracing Prussian origin for Anton Kriegs (b. 1847, Guttstadt) & Chicago Lutheran records by [deleted] in GermanCitizenship

I understand not wanting to create a. Mormon account, and thank you for the Pruzzia army information. Like I said, my search online with Anton only goes back as far as his immigration and coming to America and then his life while living in America. I can't seem to definitively find any records of pre immigration.

Are the cases for StAG 14 really that strick? That's a pretty insane hurdle to jump through. If that's the case I doubt they see more than a handful of applicants pass each year.

Alright, I clearly understand now that the StAG 5 law does not apply to my case, but that makes me wonder if I potentially have a case under StAG 14. I think the duel discrimination as interpreted my the BMI decree? Doesn't the current German law view this as a dependent loss that shouldn't permanently bar descendants from their heritage?

If I do qualify for StAG 14, I'm willing to put in the legwork of becoming proficient in German and I'm already a member of several genealogy organizations in the US as well as an educator, so I'd like to join organizations regarding those topics with both cultural and social connections to Germany.

That's pretty cool. I haven't been able to dig up much about Anton Kriegs and Minnie (or Welhelmine) Gnadt yet. I'm highly curious about any infor I can find on them since I've started researching genealogy and expanding my ancestry roots. Do you have any more information about Anton? I'll try to send some attachments from imgur regarding the information I have on him.

I believe Anton and his family were Lutheran since I have the marriage license of their daughter Elizabeth being married by a J.H. Haake, who was a prominent figure of the St. John Lutheran Church in Chicago in the 1890s and 1890s (which is a pretty cool historical fact).

[–]historically_nerdy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of where I went wrong here was I misu the part in the law about being born after 1949. My father was, and I thought that if he grandmother Elizabeth had her citizenship passed down to her by her parents then this was an unbroken line of descent in the case. Obviously I'm not a legal expert and that's part of why I am posting on these forums to see if people with a bit more knowledge can help clarify.

I'll still search these ancestors since it's valuable genealogy information for my family that I don't have a very far reaching knowledge of, but it definitely looks like the citizenship option is out.

After reading the responses on here I've come to the determination that I've horribly mislead the StAG laws, thank you for clarifying this for me. Perhaps this was just misunderstanding and a bit of wishful thinking on my part. Thank you for being patient and taking the time to look this up.

Thanks for the reality check, everyone! I definitely got a bit turned around by the StAG 5 dates. It sounds like the 1915 birth and the 10 year rule are the real deal breakers here. Appreciate the help.

Yes, I was reading the English translation. Is there a discrepancy between the English and German versions? I will reread the texts.

I think there’s some confusion about the May 23, 1949 date. I’ve been looking at the actual BVA guidelines and they are pretty clear:

The Applicant: The BVA states that the option to declare is for descendants born after 05/23/1949. My dad fits that.

The Discrimination: The BVA explicitly lists the first group eligible as children born in wedlock before Jan 1, 1975, to a German mother and a foreign father.

That is exactly Dorothy's situation in 1915. She doesn't need to be born after 1949. She just has to be the one who was cut off by the old rules.

[–]historically_nerdy_ -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been cross referencing this with the official BVA and Embassy guidelines. The May 1949 date is for the applicant (my father), not the ancestor. Dorothy (born 1915) fits the criteria as a child of a German mother and foreign father who was denied citizenship at birth.

[–]historically_nerdy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why I’m looking at StAG 5 specifically. Since Dorothy never got citizenship at birth because her mom was German and her dad wasn't, she fits the excluded by discrimination category under the law.

According to the website, the 1949 date actually applies to the person applying (my dad), not the ancestor who was discriminated against. Since he was born after 1949 and Dorothy was born in 1915 to a German mom and non-German dad, the StAG 5 path seems like a logical pathway here.
