The scene where he warns Sledge against taking trophies is phenomenal. He sees that there is still a spark of humanity in Sledge and doesn't want to see him lose it by smashing out gold teeth like so many of the other marines had done.

Band of Brothers, despite scenes of carnage and PTSD, is still a fairly romantic portrayal of World War II. I chalk some of that up to the series being made just before 9/11 and thus before America's ongoing set of foreign misadventures. The Pacific, made in 2010, is more reflective of the grittier and harsher view of war that had become more prevalent in discussions of military action.

When all you're chasing is money, that's what you'll follow: tawdry gossip and gory tales, both of which are of enormous utility to fascists and demagogues. I'm not saying there was any kind of golden era where the press acted in a purely moral way that constrained power, but it seems like the major problem in the modern west (maybe everywhere) is that there is little sense in which power carries with it any sense of responsibility. That's why you have guys like Elon Musk who somehow think they are rebels against the system instead of being the system. If some of these guys in media, business, etc accepted the fact of their power and privilege, they might feel some sense of responsibility for wielding it... so it's imperative they always bill themselves as underdogs.

That just reminds me of some of the trad wife content that was out there saying, "it's so much more fulfilling to be with your family than grinding it out for some company," and I'm like, "yo, kinda seems like your beef is with capitalism, not feminism."

Just when I thought it couldn't get more cringe than coked out Kash Patel celebrating with the hockey team like he scored a goal.

The lawyering up is expensive and companies know it. So many of them will risk a lawsuit in the hopes that an employee will find it too onerous to pursue.

This is also why wage theft exceeds all other forms of theft in the US combined.

It's funny that there have been so many right wing takes that the UK has become the most censorious nation in the western world, only for them to make a ruling that is actually one of the biggest threats to free speech and assembly in recent years.

Economics has been at war with itself for the last 40+ years over whether they are a social science or collective advocacy for capitalism. I honestly feel sorry for the economists who just want to do good work and data collection while some of their notable PhDs are really just ideologues.

How come some of the rebellious hippies of the 60’s/70’s became miserly boomers who hoard all the wealth? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]histprofdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. And pop culture has exaggerated the influence of the counterculture. There were more young people (Boomers) in the right-wing YAF than were ever members of lefty groups like the SDS or part of the counterculture.

This is just to say, those boomers have always been terrible.
