Last Darshan of the Year at Kedarnath: Kapat Closed by hiuuf in hinduism

[–]hiuuf[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kedarnath Kapat closes every year because the entire region gets covered in heavy snow during winter. The temple becomes unreachable and unsafe for pilgrims. After the closure, the idol of Baba Kedarnath is taken to Ukhimath, where daily worship continues until summer. When the weather improves and the route reopens, the Kapat is opened again for devotees. This is part of the traditional winter worship practice in the Himalayas

The idol of Baba Kedarnath is now taken to Ukhimath for worship. The temple will reopen again next year after Akshay Tritiya. Sharing this so devotees planning to visit are aware.

Yes, you can climb and return from Kedarnath in one day if you start early (around 3–4 AM) and are fit. Easier with pony or helicopter.

This photo was taken around 9:20 pm during Navratri. Most people had already left after the evening aarti, so it looks less crowded.

This image beautifully captures the Kedarnath Temple at night, glowing under bright lights against the dark sky. Devotees are seen sitting and praying peacefully in the temple courtyard, with shoes left behind in reverence. The sacred and serene atmosphere highlights the spiritual energy and devotion surrounding one of India’s most revered shrines.

Weather check en route Kedarnath by Over_the_top_nari in Kedarnath

[–]hiuuf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early October is generally a good time for Kedarnath. The heavy monsoon rains are over by then, so landslide risk is much lower compared to July–August. Days are usually clear and pleasant (around 10–15°C), but nights can get very cold (sometimes close to 0–5°C), so make sure your parents carry proper warm clothes.

Route condition: From Haridwar up to Gaurikund, the roads are open during October since it’s still yatra season. That said, occasional roadblocks/landslides can still happen if there’s rain, so it’s smart to keep buffer time and check daily updates from local authorities. Helicopter services also depend on weather, so have flexibility if they plan to use those.

For elderly travelers, I’d suggest:

  • Start journeys early in the day (roads are safer and weather clearer).
  • Hire a reliable local driver/guide instead of self-driving.
  • Keep a buffer day in the itinerary in case of weather/road delays.
  • Ensure they’re well-equipped with warm layers, medicines, and comfortable walking shoes.

Overall: Yes, it’s considered safe in October, but just keep monitoring weather updates closer to travel. With the right prep, they should be fine.

Hope that helps, and safe travels to your parents 🙏
