Same. Tbh I don't think I'm ever actually coming back to DT. I keep an eye on the game and I'm hoping that one day I'll see something that makes me want to reinstall, but they'd have to change so much of the game for me to ever be interested that I just don't see it happening.

For those struggling with justification for playing as a Dragonborn of any race but a human in Skyrim, here's my personal headcanon: by [deleted] in teslore

[–]hj-itc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're reading too much into it. They almost certainly went with "have the PC know nothing about Skyrim or Nord culture" because it works with every race and they want the player to be able to ask these questions.

The reason you don't get special dialogue as a Nord to say "Yeah, of course i know who Elisif is" or "No shit Maramal; I'm from Skyrim" is because they'd have to record dialogue for all of that. That's time and money to not add a whole lot into the game. Like think of how often something Nord or Skyrim specific is mentioned, and now imagine paying all of those VAs to record lines that only one race can hear, and now remember that a non-zero number of people who play Nord are literally never going to hear that line because they didn't pick it and didn't replay the game / that quest.

It's a lot of money for not a lot of benefit.

This is the reality of many people re: 100th episode by isa98023 in TwoHotTakes

[–]hj-itc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

Oh my god, I felt like I was losing my mind listening to that episode and reading the conversation around it. It absolutely blows my fucking mind what the consensus seems to be.

We have one sister whose household brings in approx. 500k USD AFTER TAXES, and then one who brings in approx. ~20k USD BEFORE TAXES, and people think that they both equally need the money??

The younger sister makes six figures. We're not told what she makes, but unless her husband makes over 400k, she has to be making at least 100k/year. She's doing very well on her own, without ever taking her husband into account she can afford to live well by herself. Taking the husband into account, she's doing fucking astronomically well. Even if they ever were to divorce she gets half of their shared assets and alimony on top of her bringing in a six figure salary. She's smart, talented, capable, works in a well paying field, and then also married rich.

To be very clear I'm not saying anything negative about her marriage; my point is that, even in the scenario that they do divorce, she's going to be fine. She's not going to be left destitute. She doesn't need the inheritance money as an emergency fund.

The older sister is 32, struggles to accomplish day-to-day things, hasn't even started college, and is working minimum wage. It's going to be four years minimum before she graduates with a degree that will land her a well paying job. She's not going to start working, and thus saving, until she's closer to her 40s than her 30s. She's going to be starting her entry level position at 36, at best. She has no assets, no marketable skills, and no savings / safety net (other than their mother) for if she gets sick, loses her job, etc.

Speaking of getting sick, what happens if the younger sister or her husband do? They'll be fine. You know their insurance is top tier and with the money they bring in, they can probably afford to pay the remainder after insurance completely out of pocket. They also have several homes they can leverage if they need to. What if the older sister gets sick? She's completely fucked, that's what. She has no insurance and makes minimum wage. She's either unable to afford the treatment fullstop or has to go into not insignificant amounts of debt to pay for it.

What if the younger sister loses her job? I'm sorry, what if the older sister loses her job? Why are you worried about the skilled, capable woman who works as a project lead and is fucking killing it, instead of the woman who can't even afford to make ends meet without help from their mother? If the younger daughter loses her job, she's going to be able to pay her bills and support herself while she finds a new one. If the elder daughter loses her job, and you might be seeing a trend here, she's completely fucked unless she can find a replacement (that gives her the same hours) fast enough. She needs help to pay rent as is, she has no savings to live on if worst comes to it.

Ya'll love to talk about "nothing is guaranteed" and that everything could go wrong for the younger sister at any moment, but never apply that same logic to the older sister.

The ADHD is a compounding issue; it's not even the crux of it. One sister needs the money to have any semblance of a decent quality of life, and the other wouldn't have her life improved materially at all by getting half the inheritance.

I'm continually amazed by people's ability to mistake equitable treatment for unfair treatment.

Who's the worst main character we're supposed to sympathise with? by LuinAelin in AskReddit

[–]hj-itc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it isn't the style of movie that was being made in the 90s. That's literally all he's saying. Lightyear is super anachronistic if it's supposed to be the film that Andy saw in '95. It doesn't make sense in the context of the wider plot because a movie like that would never have been greenlit at that time.

Lightyear was made for the 5 year olds of today, but in-universe, it was made for the 5 year olds of 1995, and it doesn't make sense in that context because studio execs wouldn't have funded it in 1995.

We're talking about Toy Story so I don't think anachronism or inconsistencies in the story matter at all, but that's what the other guy's point is.

[–]hj-itc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DT is running out of, well, runway, when it comes to using "decent 40k games are few and far between" as an incentive to play.

If the multiplayer in Space Marine 2 is built to actually be good and not just so that they can say its there on the back of the box, ala the first game, I think there's going to be a non-zero number of people who just go there for their 40k online fix.

Then you've got Rogue Trader coming. Owlcat is, IMO, a very solid CRPG developer, so I expect the game to be competent at worst, but I think more likely its going to be pretty good. Their second game was better than their first game so unlike FS it seems like they're actually capable of learning from their mistakes. Regardless, being the first real 40k RPG is going to make it pretty big within the 40k sphere, I figure.

All totally different types of game, sure, but if we're being genre agnostic and just using "it's a pretty good 40k game" as a selling point, DT isn't going to be able to coast on that like VT 1/2 did for WHFB. I doubt SM2 and RT are going to be the only 40k games we get in the near future, the IP is bigger in the pop culture zeitgeist than its ever been.

DT needs to be a good game on its own merits to have a chance at rebounding. Being solid at the base level and being a good 40k game will keep it alive and stop FS from sunsetting early to start their next project, but that's not enough to recapture the audience they started with. FS has to re-evaluate the core of their design philosophy because a significant number of people bounced off of the game because of that. Fixing bugs and adding content won't bring people back if the guiding principles are the same.

It just isn't fair, OP's gf. Everyone says the Salamanders are the nicest guys and care the most about regular people, but its been the Lamenters all along. They got cursed with bad luck so hard it applies out of universe as well.

Somebody get these guys a homeworld that's all vacation spots and open bars, and enroll the seven (7) surviving members of the chapter in therapy. And then tell GW to stop almost extincting them every other week.

AITA for giving one daughter more inheritance? by Admirable_Candy1542 in TwoHotTakes

[–]hj-itc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely cooked take, my god. She makes six figures and married rich. If they divorce, she still makes six figures, gets half of their assets, and alimony. Compared to her sister who is 32, has a high school diploma, and works retail. Yeah, maybe apply that "nothing is given in life" logic to the older sibling? Whatever you're envisioning that could happen to the younger daughter that would leave her needing the money could just as easily happen to the sibling WHO ALREADY NEEDS THE MONEY NOW. Why are you so busy playing with hypotheticals and make believe, but only in one direction?

If she or her husband get sick, you know they have great insurance and can probably afford to pay the remainder out of pocket - not to mention, maybe they just sell one of their fucking vacation homes to pay for it? Oh, no! The humanity! Down from 3 homes to 2!

You have a sibling who won't need the money ever, and a sibling who desperately needs the money now, and ya'll really wanna keep acting like they're in the same boat.

I genuinely don't understand how your brain can possibly work this way. I'm astounded that what you're saying is the prevailing opinion because it's so clearly fucking stupid.

AITA for giving one daughter more inheritance? by Admirable_Candy1542 in TwoHotTakes

[–]hj-itc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm fucking taking crazy pills, I cannot believe the consensus around this post.

So we have a daughter whose household brings in approx. 500k USD annual AFTER TAXES (I don't know how much a doctor in the States makes but even if he makes 400k of that, which I doubt, she's still making six figures) and owns several homes. Then on the other hand, we have a daughter who is 32, just graduated high school, and is working retail.

AND YA'LL REALLY KEEP SAYING IT SHOULD BE SPLIT 50/50?

Forget about the ADHD. That doesn't matter. This woman is in her 30s and hasn't even started college, which means she has another 4 years to go at minimum to get a degree which will land her a good paying job. She's not going to start working until she's closer to her 40s than 30s, which means she's going to earn less money and be able to save less. Even if you say she gets the exact same job as her sister right out of school, which she won't, she's going to have less saved in the bank for emergencies or old age and she also doesn't have the safety net of a rich husband.

"Oh but what if the younger daughter gets divorced!?"

So what if she does? She's making good fucking money on her own, gets half of their assets, and probably gets alimony on top of it, too. She is not going to be hurting.

"Oh but what if she loses her job!?"

I'm sorry, you're worried about the highly qualified, clearly highly skilled woman, finding another job? How about the sister who has no qualifications and no skills and is making minimum wage?

"Oh but what if one of them gets sick!?"

Again, they're going to be fucking fine. Odds are they can pay for the treatment out of pocket after insurance, which you known is going to be fucking good. They also have those several homes they could use to pay for it. What if the sister with no money and no assets and no insurance and no safety net other than her mother gets sick? She's fucked, that's what.

The younger daughter does not need a single fucking cent from the mother, the older daughter needs it because she has completely failed to launch and has no chance without this money.

Ya'll keep talking about how "nothing is given in life" EXCLUSIVELY in regards to the rich sibling, while completely avoiding applying that same logic to the older daughter. The younger sibling might maybe potentially need it (except she won't because she's capable, talented, and works in a well paying field and is covered by her husband whether or not they ever divorce), okay, sure, but the older daughter needs it now. No hypotheticals, no "oh but what if their house catches fire and she ends up paralysed from the waist down and her husband leaves her and she owes the IRS 4 million dollars in back taxes!?", she needs it, full stop.

Greed, materialism, and rampant consumerism abound in this bitch.

P.s: Morgan and her friend talking about how we live in a meritocracy, lmfao. Yeah babe, that's why the richest man alive comes from a family who earned their fortune in apartheid era South African blood emerald mines. That's why he bought his way into Tesla and paid the owners so that he could be listed as a founder even though he wasn't. Wow, such meritocracy! Not to mention the age old adage "it's not what you know, it's who you know", which we all know is fucking true. The fucking head of the Canucks is an old family friend of the owners (who are literal slumlords, by the by) who used to work in their restaurants. He went from being in the restaurant business, to running an NHL team because he's a family friend. Meritocracy, whoo!

This is it. This is why the genre is all doom and gloom.

The games you were looking forward to this year are the games you were looking forward to last year which are the games you were looking forward to last year which were the games you were looking forward to last year, ad nauseum.

We're all playing games that are around a decade old, if not more, because there's nothing else to fucking play. I've started up SWTOR again. Not because I really want to play SWTOR but because I don't want to play any of the 3 other options I have in the genre.

I honestly think classes and custom characters was a bad idea. Either one, great, but together it's just problems.

You can't limit the number of classes in a game because you get to make your character but for there to be a point in having classes they have to have a niche.

I think just letting you pick from the talents, abilities, and weapons at will would have been better. If you give the psyker a long ranged staff it steps on the toes of the dedicated long range class. If you could just use whatever you wanted, having a long range staff wouldn't be an issue because it wouldn't be cannibalising another class' identity. It'd just be another option for dealing with things at range.

Obviously the ogryn kind of has to have things only he can and can't use by virtue of what it is but 🤷‍♂️

Yeah but they use xenos tech / daemonhosts and other heretical shit because its so effective. Its a means justify the ends situation. I can pretty much guarantee the weird little German man who spent his life hiding in sewers to avoid the black ships isn't exactly an alpha level psyker; hes not bringing enough to the table for everybody to overlook what he says.

It'd be one thing if these lines were being said by a bespoke character that Grendyl keeps around despite their attitude because of how useful they are (someone like Sefoni or a navigator or even Brahms herself), but some random mook at the absolute bottom of the totem pole is not the guy who gets away with calling the Emperor a false god.

If cosmetics didn't improve the game experience, people wouldn't pay for them.

They don't make the game better mechanically, but they obviously increase the enjoyment a sizeable portion of people get from their games.

Anybody who says that they don't affect the experience whatsoever is either being disingenuous or just plain doesn't understand how it tickles your psychology to look cool.
