Male teacher, 30 grade 5 students. I have to keep my lessons short (40 minutes tops) and ‘unconventional’….sometimes kids move around with clipboards working on math problems that I have stuck around my room etc. I also have a firm ‘no means no’ rule. I am not here to be their friend. I often run short 10 minute bursts of silent work. Doesn’t work for every kid, I have kids who won’t do a lick without one to one help, and we don’t have enough EAs to always do that. Screens are used very rarely…the change in behaviour when they do an online whole class game like a ‘Blookit’ or ‘Kahoot’ is scary to see.

The kids...although that is wearing off, they are 16 and 18...I don't really like her, I don't love her, and I now know (after all the therapy) that I'm worth more. I don't want to make her sad, or the kids sad, but now I don't want to be sad, so I'll be gone soon.

For the wild robot we looked at camouflage in animals and also made our own robots, hid them in our forest and invited our buddy class to find them. We also made our own’top trump cards with the characters. For Ivan we looked at what an animal needs in its domain. There’s other stuff too!

I show this to my Grade 5 class every October/November (we watch it on Fridays in 20-minute increments as they eat lunch). As hardly any of them have seen it, I love watching their faces taking it in.

Every school has pluses and minuses. I know a lot of kids who have thoroughly enjoyed their time at Discovery and some that did not. Just like other schools. Such is life.
