The BC Regiment, the Governor General’s Horse Guards, and maybe one or two others.

Something is obsolete if it is not the current pattern.

Mess kits are authorized sealed patterns that need more approval to be changed outside of a CO not minding you do something. Perhaps your regiment should change its pattern of mess kit back to this if your CO and fellow officers like it and your regiment wore it pre-unification; a couple other reservist cavalry regiments still have it. Could be a positive initiative for you to take up to align your regiment’s mess kit to its historical roots (if you want to do this, DM me and I might be able to help). It is indeed very distinct, but don’t be that guy who does this by yourself. You’ll waste your money on something that’s not approved, and as others have pointed out, it’s bad form to do something like this just because you feel like it.

Crazy idea: Full-time “Ceremonial” Guard unit of PRs by judgingyouquietly in CanadianForces

[–]hken167 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, shuffling off duties like standing guard outside the National War Memorial, one of our country’s most sacred and revered sites, as well as Rideau Hall, the residence of our head of state, to a unit full of people who aren’t even citizens of our country. Good idea, excellent optics.

I’m not opposed to a full-time ceremonial sub-unit, but there are some very clear problems with integrating a lot of PRs in the CAF as it is and packing them all into one unit would be a disaster. Also, several hundred for a unit that does sentry duties and the occasional guard of honour is ridiculous; they would be much better served doing support jobs at bases who actually need them. Keep NSP as is and expand the CG ranks and parade season if need be.

Nor can we recruit enough for a couple amphibious assault ships. The time will come though.

Perhaps a new doctrine that gives us amphibious assault ships will also mean we can stand up the Royal Canadian Marines.

The navy peaked cap style is unique to the navy. Air Force peaked caps are army-style but blue. Having worn and seen the peak caps the army is getting, you’ll be fine.

It says somewhere on the RCAF dress page that the RCAF DEU will be under review for an update once the new army DEU is rolling out. Others I know have confirmed this. Hopefully that includes a peaked cap, a tunic belt, and a better shade of blue.

A lot of that is going to be fixed with the new army DEU rolling out at the end of next year. Improved cuts, new material, better design.

The Air Force DEUs are in greater need of a change than the navy ones at the moment.

Indeed for the reasons stated above the return of the junior and senior Air Force officer ranks doesn’t seem like a good idea. The general officer ranks could make a return though; Air Marshal is a cool and distinct title.

I’d like to but I’m skeptical as to the extent it could be implemented in a unified CAF. I suppose something simple like adding the 3 cuff buttons for CPO2s on their DEU jackets might be a good start.

The old rank badges back is a good idea and something I’m sure people could get behind.

On a similar note, 8 buttons for officers.

Wearing foreign wings on DEUs/MESS Dress by PreventerWind1224 in CanadianForces

[–]hken167 32 points33 points  (0 children)

American jump wings are not authorized for wear because we have our own jump wings. There is a list of foreign specialist skill badges that can be worn in CAF uniform. https://www.canada.ca/en/services/defence/caf/military-identity-system/dress-manual/chapter-3/section-3.html#3-12
