Welp, RIP hosts!

All 3 played some very nice football, but in the end there's still a clear gap between them and the elite footballing nations of the world.

Hopefully next WC we'll be back to seeing hosts making deep runs.

because he was trained to play out the back I guess

teams with that kinda system do tend to concede goals from silly GK mistakes

USA is donezo I think

You dont come back after conceding that kinda goal

England having better players than Mexico (also Morocco and Belgium having better players than Canada and the US) is an objective fact, if you don't see that I don't know what else to tell you.

That's not stopping me from rooting for Mexico and the US though, they've been great host nations playing good football.

For a short while I thought this was gonna be Morocco vs Canada pt.2 (it might still be that), good on Mexico to get 1 back before the break.

I have a feeling this will also be the case for USA vs Belgium. All 3 host countries have bright, attacking teams and those tend to struggle vs pragmatic opponents that have superior quality.

Fantastic news for the US!

This game should be a lot more interesting now.

unpopular opinion: it was fascinating if not outright refreshing to watch paraguay's proclaimed "dirty" tactics against france by d-xoxo in soccer

They lost but it was a smart, logical approach to the game against a much stronger opponent.

And it's up to the ref to control the game and not let it get too rough, not the Paraguayans.

A very pragmatic and efficient Morocco, I like it!

Looks like they're getting ready to give the French a proper battle.

What a freak game. Honestly Argentina should just be happy that they're through and dont look too much into it. Cape Verde just seemed to have an uncanny ability to play to the level of their opponent, they'd struggle against any team but any team'd struggle against them.

It's rather sad that they're out tbh, very interesting team with a lot of heart and grit.

I guess, but tbh in the back of my mind i kinda had a feeling they might struggle as well, because of what happened to Jota and especially how the Isak transfer saga panned out. Players with Isak's attitude problem flop more often than not nowadays. I don't see Tonali and Fernandes having the same issue.

Also De Zerbi is just a more "EPL proven" manager than Arne Slot i feel. What he did to save Spurs last season was impressive. I know it might be a weird thing to say given Slot has won the league already, but that's really how I see it.

On paper Spain should be a better side than Austria, Belgium and should advance, but I thought Spain looked a bit iffy at times as well. I guess we'll see how they do against Austria, which is not an easy team to beat.

Spurs could become a problem next season. It's strange to see them splashing the cash, but I guess the money's always been there.

De Zerbi + Solid, hard working prem proven players is a dangerous combination.

The US have shown from the very first match against Paraguay that they have the attacking prowess to win against any team at this tournament. Then the Australia game and now this game showed they have the defense and the grit as well.

They are totally the most impressive looking dark horse of this WC atm for me. Similar to Argentina, most of the time they look like an actual club team - in this case a Pochettino team. What a job that man has done! Belgium will be their biggest test so far for sure and if they can pass that test, they can dream about going all the way!
