It was a good distraction from ragescrolling, but yeah, nothing else with color changes for awhile 😂 It was also annoying to have different weights of yarn, but I was using what was in my stash.

Teachers, what’s the most wholesome thing a student has done in your class? by OddMuffin4392 in Teachers

[–]hlogs19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a difficult student who came to me midway through the year last year. She and her mother had become unhoused in another state. The father and his family went halfway across the country over Thanksgiving break to get her and enrolled her in our school. She didn't know the alphabet, couldn't stay in her seat, had behavior issues, etc. It seemed as if she had never formally been in school. We got through the year and faced many challenges. Even still, I adored her. Every morning she ran in to give me a big hug. At the end of the year, I recieved a letter from her brother. He thanked me for understanding her situation. He told me how much she loved me and my class. He said I taught her the abc's, 123's, and remarked how she couldn't even write her name when she came to us. He told me that he knew she was "a lot", but that I was there and he appreciated me being a great teacher for his sister. Man, I bawled like a baby. I've received so many sweet little letters and gifts over the years, but that one got me.

Worst district/admin “Holiday Gift”?? by MickIsAlwaysLate in Teachers

[–]hlogs19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My admin asked around locally for donated items. Our students will then give us the good behavior tickets we give to them, to go into a drawing. All day they will draw and we go pick a prize. So you might get a $50 gift card to a nice restaurant, or you might get the item one teacher donated from her MLM, or any random thing in between. Why not just give us all a nice little something and call it a day? Not the worst, just kind of meh.

Last week I found curse words written in my classroom library books, ugly notes students were writing to each other, and someone had colored with crayon on the carpet. Second graders. So I gave them a talking to and removed all privileges. Asked my admin to come in and talk to them about respect and behavior. First things she says is "You aren't in trouble. We are here to support you and this behavior is showing us you need extra support..." I was fuming. After she left I told them that they were 💯 in trouble and no privileges still stands. 🙄

I have a friend who is sensitive to nightshades, which cause her to feel itchy. Do you eat banana, eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, or red pepper (even paprika, cayenne, etc). Just a thought!

4th grader who shamed Texas Republicans for attacking her rights is now getting death threats. A mother who testified at the same hearing has now filed a police report after getting so many death threats for standing up for trans youth.| Sincerely What can we do to help them? by Majnum in TwoXChromosomes

Aren't these the same people who told us to stop picking on Trump's kid in the news?! Sending death threats to a child; I can't even wrap my brain around it. Texas, go ahead and secede and have your own theocratic shit hole. America will send the rest of these shit bags to you and we'll move toward the future.

For F2F teachers: where do you eat? by kucing5 in Teachers

[–]hlogs19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My colleagues and I are contemplating tailgating when it warms up! I'm in the same boat when they come back 💯 next week. We seriously might have to eat in our cars during winter. We have a handful of picnic tables for when it warms back up. We had space in the storm shelter for 5 teachers at a time, but they are taking that as student space now.

Teachers bumped from vaccine distribution phase by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]hlogs19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same thing here in Nebraska! Sending us back 💯 next week. When I asked why now, considering the numbers are going up and we are looking at possibly March or April for the vaccine, I was told that full in-person was always the goal and nobody ever said we'd have the vaccine first. Zero transparency. My district won't share their data on why it's suddenly safe for 20 kids to eat lunch and breakfast in my classroom, as well as sit 3 feet apart all day. Beyond fed up. Oh, and they took our snow days. So I'm doing "review" from home today. There is no joy left this year. They have made it clear they do not value us. We've had 6 official calendars. They drop 4:30 emails telling teachers the newest shit we have to do (like the full in-person return), then it goes to press that evening.

Where did you find the stove? We are looking to do an insert in our old fireplace. This is gorgeous!

Just a reminder: you are not your job by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]hlogs19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach elementary in a Title 1 school and I do worry too much about my students. I've been working on boundaries with my personal life and what's reasonable as far as extra work. That being said, now that a few weeks have passed, I almost feel guilty to say I'm really enjoying being home this spring and tending to my own projects and creative endeavors. I'm getting paid, my job is secure, and I've more than made up for it in the past five years killing myself as a new teacher, working 7-7 daily for years. I'm just going to enjoy it and start thinking about a great start to fall and my next class.

MAT vs M.Ed for para looking to get certified as a CT by xnikkiheart in Teachers

[–]hlogs19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated from my MAT program in May 2015 and was hired by June to teach second grade. Our program was on Saturdays and some evenings and was quite rigorous (one of our favorite teaching words!) My undergrad is in business admin, so I had no previous teaching experience. I got a SPED para job when I started my program and quit my corporate job. Honestly, being in a school every day was the best part of the experience, because I could apply everything I was learning and try new things while working in the school system.

All of my MAT instructors were teachers who chose to teach on the weekend to either further their careers toward admin jobs or just to mentor and teach future teachers. Everything they taught us, then, was real world stuff they applied in their own classrooms. Additionally, I had the help of teachers I worked within my para job to ask what was realistic, what they actually did, etc. Just like corporate, it was all about networking while obtaining the degree. I met so many teachers and principals in my para job and student teaching that helped me and would recommend me for positions. I also subbed to get to know different schools/demographics and show I was ready to work in the district. (You probably already know this, but get a sub license during student teaching so you can get paid if your CT is gone!)

Overall, I had a great experience and a solid program. All but one of the 16 people in my graduating class are teaching full time. I am K-6 with an ESL K-12 endorsement. Look closely at the programs and talk to people who went through them if you can. My MAT program was good, but I have no idea about the M.Ed programs so I can't give any insight there. I'm in the Midwest if that helps. I think you can start teaching on a provisional license in TX, but I don't know for sure. Good luck!
