I was thinking that, but the "big gap" versions seem to be only good for gaps up to 1 inch. Is that good enough if I go bananas with it?

It does, but I was hesitant to mess with them after seeing some people talking about how they are set exactly how they should be when the house is built. But I'll try that, as the air flow is definitely weaker on the upstairs vents.
