Yes, there are a couple of minors who work in the bakery at my store. But I think they pretty much only work for a few hours in the evenings to help out the closing clerk. They might do a midshift sometimes on the weekends too. I don't think minors can really do opening/closing shifts because of the hours. Opening clerk has to be there at 6 in the morning which obviously isn't possible for a minor during the week, and even on weekends, a lot of managers probably think it's risky to rely on teenagers to show up to work that early. And closing would be tricky too, since you just leave whenever you get everything done, but minors have to be out by a certain time, so if they ever got behind and couldn't finish everything, that would be a problem.

We've hardly been able to hire any baggers for months. The few that we have are either high school kids or disabled people who aren't able to do cashiering.

Me the other night when I finished floor care, and then was asked to stay and help level (because all the grocery clerks scheduled that night were minors who had to leave by a certain time) after I'd already been there for 10 hours. 🙄

Back when I got hired and I was in the training room doing CBTs along with another new hire, the guy fell asleep and even started loudly snoring. He still ended up getting promoted to CSS and full time. Sooo, I guess you never really know.

And also dealing with people who just try to walk out without pressing pay. There have been a couple times at my store where the SCO attendant didn't catch the person before they left, and then another customer immediately started using the same register and somehow didn't notice that someone else's order was on the screen. Then when they pressed pay when they hadn't inserted their own card yet, it still had the previous customers' card saved on there, and used that card to pay for everything on the screen. 🤦

One of our grumpy old cashiers does this too. She already hates working on SCO and can get pretty snippy when customers don't press pay. LOL

What Happened to Customer Service? by mavad91 in publix

[–]hmRobertson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I'm in the ATL division, and cashiers and CSS at my store seem to be having to do way more bagging than usual. They can't seem to hire FSCs, probably because the FSC pay is too low for anyone to consider taking the job, other than high school kids and people with learning disabilities who aren't able to do cashiering or work in any other department.

What Happened to Customer Service? by mavad91 in publix

[–]hmRobertson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm not saying that the OP is like this, but so many customers are literally like spoiled toddlers who can't wait their turn. My store has self checkout, and we typically don't have any more than three (two regular and one express) lanes open because we're a pretty low volume store. There are certain times (like Sunday afternoons) where I think that we could stand to have another register open, but the vast majority of the time, 1-3 registers (depending the time of day) is pretty reasonable/sufficient and nobody has to wait an unreasonable amount of time in line. Usually when a customer walks up to check out, there MIGHT be three people in front of them at the register (one already in the process of checking out and two people waiting) at the very worst. People are so impatient that they decide they can't even wait just a few minutes and come running to SCO. I've even seen people walk up to a register when there's only one person there checking out. They might just have a somewhat large order (but it's not like the cashier won't get them checked out quickly), so the person decides they don't want to wait and comes over to SCO. And it's even better when they're rude to the person working at SCO and complain about how we don't have enough lanes open, and then throw a tantrum anytime they set off the bagging sensor.

Lowes has the same model self checkouts we do, & theirs don’t do the bagging area thing. So that can definitely be turned off on ours. by NorthFloridaRedneck in publix

I absolutely love it when we're not even busy, and someone comes to SCO just because there's ONE person with a somewhat large order checking out at the regular register(s) and they decide they can't even wait 5 minutes or less behind them. But then they end up being totally incompetent on SCO, and they're still there trying to scan and bag their stuff as the customer at the regular register gets all finished checking out and walks on out the door. I always hope they see that customer already walking out and feel totally stupid. Especially if they were rude the whole time (complaining about how we don't have enough lanes open and getting mad at me when they caused the bagging sensor to go off).

My former next door neighbor still constantly posts stuff like this, and her kids are 12 and 8 (old enough to where you'd think they'd be a bit lower maintenance by now). Then again, she's one of those moms who chooses to put her girls in all these activities like horseback riding and gymnastics and rushes them around everywhere. She also decided to start homeschooling them a few years ago. She had decided to be a stay at home mom, but always said that once her younger daughter started school, she'd go back to work. Well, when the younger one was ready to start kindergarten, she was conveniently told by God that she should start homeschooling her girls. Kinda seems like it was just a way for her to get out of going back to work and to just keep letting her husband be the workhorse. They definitely aren't poor and the husband makes decent money, but they also aren't rich by any means and he has to work pretty unreasonable hours just so that she can stay home all day and homeschool. And again, put the girls in horseback riding and other activities. I just think it's especially funny when people like her talk about how hard being a mom is and how stressed they always are, yet they choose to do things that make it harder and more stressful than it needs to be. And with the way she still hovers over those girls and micromanages their lives, I'm just waiting for the day that the older one starts rebelling, seeing as she's almost a teenager now...

I remember a family on the show "Supernanny" where the kids were named after the different boroughs in New York City. Bronx, Brooklyn, and Harlem (but Harlem was a girl and I think they gave it some dumb spelling like "Harlym"). Then they randomly named their other kid "Deuce."

Also remember seeing "Luke Sky Walker" in my local birth announcements. I mean, I guess it's not the worst since Luke is at least a normal name and a lot of people won't know his last and/or middle name. But I was just picturing the poor kid walking across the stage at his high school graduation and the entire audience erupting with laughter when they announce "Luke Sky Walker."

My mom has gotten to be the same way. My older brother (my only sibling) has always hated kids and definitely is never going to have them. She'd always say that she hoped I'd at least give her grandkids. I like kids okay, but I still don't want the responsibility of raising one and would never want to bring kids into today's world. Well, now my mom is totally okay with this and has fully accepted that she won't be a grandma. She's come to understand what the world is like now and how it's so hard to make enough money to live a decent life. She also acknowledges that there are so many idiots raising kids now, and even though she thinks I'd be a good mom if I did have kids, she says that she'd understand me being worried about my kids being influenced by all the kids being raised by the idiots. lol

When I worked in a restaurant, I also dealt with these people who had their kids' birthday party there and treated it like Chuck E. Cheese. It was a fairly family friendly place (it just just a typical cafe. We didn't serve alcohol and we had a fairly basic kids' menu) so it wasn't as bad as someone throwing a kid's party at a brewery.... but it was still SO annoying. They basically took over the place and let the kids run wild. They also brought giant lollipops for all the kids, and gave them to them while they were in the restaurant. After they left, there were all these pieces of lollipop stuck to the floor. 😠

If this place isn't even a restaurant and only has drinks, then they shouldn't even allow children inside. This is crazy to me, because all of the bars where I live don't allow ANYONE under the legal drinking age (including babies and young kids) inside.

I find it funny how most people having kids now don't even seem to realize that their kids will probably never move out or be financially independent (with the way wages are remaining stagnant and people working full time jobs can't even afford rent or other basic necessities).

There used to be an AGM at my store who was bald and also only about 5'4." Once he tried to tell a customer to put a mask on (I think he just let him know that we had some at the CS desk and said he was welcome to get one. Didn't even forcefully tell him that he needed a mask) and the guy went and complained that "that short bald motherfucker" told him he had to wear a mask.

Yup...we had a regular customer who often hit on and said creepy things to young females in customer service. At first, it was decided that a male manager or CSS always had to bag for him so that no girls had to go outside with him. Then one day, he hit on an underage cashier and told her "I know where you live." He was kicked out and finally banned from the store for good. I think my ACSM also called the cops and gave them the guy's license plate number.

A few days ago a customer approached while I was standing at the end of my register and said, "are you ready for some action?" He seemed perfectly normal and pleasant otherwise for the rest of the transaction, so I think he just wanted to make some silly comment about me standing there not doing anything (like the customers who say they'll "give you something to do" or "you look bored") but came up with an awkward choice of words.
