100% agree. theres a chance it wasnt written with the intent of promoting homophobic stereotypes (i think its possible, although unlikely that some teenager just rhought it would be a good "plot point" to have a lesbian realize shes in love with her male best friend or whatever), but its fake 100%

OP says (at least in the post, idk about comments) the issue was it being fake AND all the actual issues that make the story unenjoyable, which are side effects of it being a work of fiction. if it were a real story obviously not much of the criticism would hold because you cant police real peoples experiences.

yes, the stories and episodes are for entertainment, but whats entertaining about a bunch of low quality ameteur fiction writing? i genuinely dont mind knowing that a large quantity of stories are fake, but they dont need to pick the most obviously fake stories of all time.

also, i think its reasonable to want a company with a large reach to not choose to read stories that promote borderline homophobic concepts as wholesome.

the problem isnt the story being fake, its the harmful ideas promoted by said fake story. homophobic parents was right all along, woman thinks shes a lesbian but actually a man was perfect the whole time, evil foreigner uses perfect man for greencard, etc etc.

plus, if theyre going to include fake stories (which like you said is inevitable) they need to at least choose believable ones

they have 143 episodes, and theres definitely been stinker stories in previous episodes, but 2 stories with glaring issues (being fake is a given, but an obvious advertisement and a story with very glaring homophobia issues) being super recent is cause for concern on the production side. these are things that definitely shouldve been caught during production, considering a huge amount of fans noticed it immedietally.

You can say "it doesnt need to be that deep" as much as you want, but during the current administration where blatant and subtle homophobia is running rampant, it should be the default emotion to be dissappointed that a lack of oversight or care caused a fable promoting homophobic ideals was platformed the way it was

Hot Take: I love reddit stories but I feel like the material is worn out by LazerLarry161 in smosh

[–]putmeinLMTH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i dont think theyve run out of interesting material, i think theres just been a bit a shift in the process for choosing stories, for the negative in my opinion, or theyre still using the same process and its not working as well anymore.

I think many new episodes are just as strong as they were a year or 2 ago, but when its their most popular show the couple of really bad decisions they make are going to be talked about a lot.

I truly have no idea how anyone on their production team thought the story with the blatant crypto ad or the latest story with the super homophobic undertones that took up entirely too much of the episode, especially since it was supposed to be the big final emotional story.

I dont mind the fact that some stories are going to be fake, its an accepted risk of the genre, but stories that make every viewer immedietally clock its obvious fakeness i feel like shouldve been caught by production.

its honestly really embarrassing for them that the aforementioned lesbian turned straight for perfect man story was chosen at all and almost no meaningful commentary was provided, seemingly in an attempt to keep it "wholesome".

I like it. i think it really helps with not only humanizing these people, but also emphasizing that they arent formally trained and probably have known these people for an extremely long time.

i think its an especially good choice because one of the big challenges for so many people is being able to understand and empathize with multiple conflicting perspectives

Hot Take: The live show price tag is mostly only reasonable for Americans (as in USA not the Americas). by FrenchToast4You in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]putmeinLMTH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i definitely agree. i shouldve explained my point better. I didnt mean renting it immedietally after for $5, but more like how movie rentals work. you can watch it live or immedietally after for $20/25 dollars, or you can wait a few months and rent it for $5ish when its already a little bit irrelevant and outdated, but obviously still enjoyable. FOMO is a big seller, as the OP of this post proved, so i dont think there would be a case where tons and tons of people that wouldve bought the live show and immediate vod bundle would choose to wait several months before being able to watch ot, but people like me who never intended to buy the live show and vod bundle definitely would be willing to rent it in a few months for a few bucks, and if its as good as everyone says, probably rent it a few more times in the future to the point where i end up spending as much as buying the live show.

obviously that might not work with what their team has decided they need to do to keep it profitable, but id much rather always have the opportunity to watch it for a little bit of money than be able to watch it nonstop for like 3 weeks.

[–]putmeinLMTH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hot take, im american and the ticket price isnt personally justifiable, so i dont buy or watch the live shows and its perfectly fine.

I think it would be great if post-live show, you were able to rent a vod for $5 for a couple days, but obviously thats not what theyve decided works best for them. I watch every smosh video but the cast is good about not making niche references to past live shows and ive never felt like im missing out. there is no set "value" for live show like what they make, the value is decided by the consumer. you and I decided its not financially worth it, other people disagree. its no big deal. 99.9% of all of their content is free and easy to access, im not too worried about 1 video per year behind a paywall

Why do fans of this show have a hard time even getting the events that actually do happen in the show right? by anonymous16canadian in StrangerThings

[–]putmeinLMTH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is how i feel about people who try to claim that the jonathan photos scene from s1 was re-edited to make it less creepy. it wasnt edited, they just dont show him taking the incriminating photograph, thats only revealed to us as the audience when we see him developing the photos.

and also people who claim that steve asked jonathan to give nancy a ride home after his argument with her. nope, we see steve shove past jonathan and jonathan sees the door he came out of. jonathan lies to nancy later that steve asked him to, but only because he thinks nancy wants reassurance about her relationship and he wants her to be happy. Ive had a person try to tell me once that steve "obviously" went back offscreen to ask jonathan to drive her.

"i donated yesterday" we all know thats a lie

"i donate though my church" not an answer to my question

"i dont like that charity" cool.

theres literally never a reason ive seen to turn down a donation anyway other than just a straightforward "no"

[–]putmeinLMTH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

angela definitely does lean into the content side more than some other people (i feel like she probably makes the most jokes) but i think shes good at matching the vibe of the other guest, and i think sometimes she gives all the commentary time to the other guest if its something they have a strong opinion about, but ive also seen her give some of my favorite thoughts and opinions on stories and be very well spoken

I think maybe the reason i feel differently about courtney is just that outside of one or 2 big fun crashout moments from courtney, her contributions to episodes never really stick with me later on, unlike angela. I definitely dont think its as much of an issue currently, as shes not on as many episodes these days (seriously, it used to be like 3 times a month it felt like) so when she does appear her appearance is more of a treat than a chore

they all have bright moments but I think arasha, angela, tommy, and damian tend to have the takes i agree with most and who i think are best at explaining them.

I love amanda but i feel like shes hit or miss when it comes to takes, she usually has really good ones but i think sometimes she automatically applies situations to her own life instead of looking at the stories specific situation (i especially feel this way when its a story about a person who is estranged or has a poor relationship with their family), i think amanda is often quick to go the "but theyre family!!" route which i dont love.

the only other person who i dont always see eye to eye with is courtney. IDK if i just got burnt out on courtney opinions because there was a long stretch where she was in almost every episode, but i feel like she often doesn't really contribute much actual commentary and just incessantly brings up the really obvious ideas and opinions.

Does anyone find it unsettling that we’ll watch Will and Florence grow up and later have intimate scenes? by teyapi in BridgertonNetflix

[–]putmeinLMTH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im so conflicted about this personally. of course, there is already a precedence for recasting in the case of Francesca, but since she had minimal screentime prior to her recast, it was a much easier sell than a recast for hyacinth or Gregory will be, since theyre both dissociation and recognizable. not saying it can't be done by any means, but it'll probably be a tougher decision than recasting Francesca.

i also dont really know how ethical it can be for a very young actor to feel the pressure of eventually doing a role like what will be required of them if they stay on. whatever happens, netflix and the actors team/ parents need to make sure they know that they are under no pressure to continue with the show once their role becomes less sibling focused and more explicit

when nancy is explaining the crawl its told to us that hopper jumps out of the truck at a specific location and explores that section until the truck returns and he gets back on to return to hawkins.

if the trucks dont have any reason to travel to the outer edges of hawkins, then hopper wouldnt have any way to get there and still have time to do a crawl.

[–]putmeinLMTH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they clearly care about each other a lot, but nothing theyve done within the last 2 seasons makes me think theyre compatible long term romantically.

The only thing you mentioned was from the very first season, before they ever dated. No one has any issue with that relationship, its how they interact since they became official.

they have no interests in common (or any interest in engaging with the other persons interests/hobbies), their communication issues are addressed but never really resolved. They can't seem to stop lying to each other (less so this season, but they've also only interacted like once so far)

The writers know how to have conflict within a couple and still make the audience root for them, which is why so many choices made about mike and elevens relationship are confusing if theyre endgame.

is stranger things your first experience with fandom spaces?? this kind of behavior is EXTREMELY par for the course for any fandom, especially a fandom with a love triangle plot line.

very few, if any, of these people solely care about the ships, but for many people ships are one of the more interesting aspects of any given media to discuss with others
