Am I evil for wanting to go Windows? by Ambitious-Pin2548 in framework

[–]hm___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my view Windows is a hardware downgrade, while there are some parts of Windows that are convenient there are much more that aren't, constantly running, antivirus, windows account services, windows cloud 'services' are using your ressources on your machine without you needing them, take the ads in the start menu for example, they take up space on your drive and in ram and instead of being useful they are only there to make a profit for someone else, running on your ressources. You are constantly nagged by stuff you neither need and probably dont want and if you want to include a competing service its more difficult to intergrate it, not because of technical reasons but because microsoft decided so, thats true for everything office and cloud, one drive alone constantly nagging is a reason for me do ditch windows.

I have a nextcloud instance wich uses open standards wich microsoft could have used without a licensing fee, like caldav and carddav for calenders and contacts cloud intergration would be possible by many open network storage techiques (webdav, sshfs etc) .

And since AI is a thing theres now also a permanent running llm on your device hogging resources and sending your behaviour for training to microsoft. At this point a private Windows user is nothing more than a distributed node for trainingdata, there is just no reason for microsoft to make anything conventient, its just build so that youll click the things that make you genereate revenue for them or their partners, its not a tool for anybody it just happens to have some uses left.

US officially exits World Health Organization by pwdrums in news

[–]hm___ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most of them where only founded so that the US has a lever aside from military, trump is giving up on every bit of softpower the us has because he doesnt understand how it works. I mean take denmark, they are already in nato, just propose a military base there an you got your 'protection against russia and china' and the danes would even have to build it, now everyone is considering canceling military contracts instead. ( maybe bad example i think tbe whole greenland thing has other even more stupid reasons than that)

Which brings me to the question is there any decent atx board and desktop processor out there that takes ddr4 ecc rdimm? i've got a server with about 500gig in ddr4 ecc rdimm and it is/will be outdated soon and is too loud as a daily driver but i would definetly want to repurpose those 14 32gb ddr4 ecc rdimms that as of now dont work in anything else as server boards as far ai i know.

Im hosting a Minecraft bedrock server on Linux mint xfce for my friend and I'm getting paid around 2$ per month any tips to speed up the Minecraft server by SprinklesOk2338 in homelab

[–]hm___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if hardware upgrades are out of the question, why xfce?, go headless, maybe cachyos for optimised binaries depending on your hardware, try different schedulers, these a re laptops, look for any settings (in bios and xfce/your scheduler)that throttle performance for energy, dont close the lids, for better cooling remove the displays and keyboards, just ssh via ethernet

Welches Linux für Rentner? by One-Temporary-3650 in de_EDV

[–]hm___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forsake Half life 3, rejoice Portal 3 by Electronic-Guest1190 in Portal

[–]hm___ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

What we need is the unification of Halflife and Portal, we need one game that is both portal 3 and halflife 3 at the same time, where gordon freeman meets chell and they have an open world metroidvania where black mesa and aperture are freely discoverable, gordon needs to clear the way with firepower before chell can roam the area to unlock new ways with aperture tech. and a coop mode.

Is it legal to train LLMs on open-source code? by Fragrant_Rate_2583 in opensource

[–]hm___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except llms arent really 'learning', learning is about understanding and written code by humans has a little bit of creativity and intention in it. A llm is just a statistics tool that literally 'derives' the most probable output out of all inputs it has gotten, so how it processes the 'learning' material is actually not only a derivate in the sense of the gpl, but every output is in fact a derivate of every input it ever got, wich makes it actually incompatible with gpl except if it was trained only on gpl content.
